Osteoporosis and Distal Radius Fractures
Dr N Hollevoet, Professor R Verdonk (Gent (Belgium))
Outcome of distal radius fractures is multifactorial. We wanted to investigate the influence of
osteoporosis on the radiological and clinical results of distal radius fractures in women older than 40
years. Forty patients were included in the study. Bone mineral density of the distal forearm, lumbar
spine and hip were correlated with fracture displacement and with clinical outcome more than one
year after sustaining the fracture. The degree of osteoporosis of the hip, lumbar spine and forearm
correlated with the clinical outcome, but only bone mineral density of the distal forearm correlated
with the degree of fracture displacement (radial shortening).
