Task developed by the TAS Department, Knox 2013 National da Vinci Decathlon Celebrating the Academic Gifts of Australian Youth - Years 9/10 Engineering Challenge Session 2 ‘Nothing is more apt to deceive us than our own judgement of our work’ Leonard da Vinci. Team Number _____________ Task developed TAS Department, Knox Grammar, 2013 Diversity of Voices and Perspectives Architecture in Perspective When and where? This task runs from 8:25am – 9:10am. At 9:10am you will be asked to take your structure to the marking area for the task. Background Perspective Drawing is a form of Pictorial Drawing that closely resembles the picture seen by the human eye. It allows us to see depth and distance. The lines receding (going) from the plane of projection converge (meet) rather than remain parallel. Therefore objects appear smaller the further away they are. Colours also soften and detail diminishes as they recede to the horizon line. Architectural structures use two-point perspective to effectively capture the size and proportion more realistically to the eye. These drawings have two vanishing points and are typical of objects where an edge is viewed and the sides converge to the vanishing point on the horizon line. Perspective drawing Two-point perspective of a city block Design Statement 2 Task developed TAS Department, Knox Grammar, 2013 You are to design and construct a simple model of an architectural structure (e.g. Building) demonstrating the basic elements of two-point perspective. The architectural structure should have walls and a roof. You are to create the structure to appear larger than it is by effectively utilising the elements of perspective. Design Parameters You will have 45 minutes to design and construct the architectural model. The Architectural model will be marked according to its original design, ability to demonstrate the effective use of perspective and how realistically it makes the structure appear larger than it is. You need to complete the design brief. Material Limitations 2 sheets of A4 paper 100mm of masking tape Pencils, pens and markers Testing Conditions Your architectural model must be able to remain upright and have walls and a ceiling. Your architectural model should be original and demonstrate effective use of perspective to appear visually larger than it actually is. Marking Criteria You will be marked on the basis of the following criteria: Original design Effective use of perspective Stability Design brief Manipulation of space /10 /10 /10 /10 /10 Marking Grid Criteria Original design Effective use of perspective Design brief Manipulation of the space to visually increase proportions Stability Skilful 9-10 Effective 8-7 10 Sound 6-4 Limited 3-0 0 TOTAL /50 3 Task developed TAS Department, Knox Grammar, 2013 Team Number _____________ Design Brief 1. Explain how you have utilised the two-point perspective in the architectural design. ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ 2.
