Recycle, Health & Environment Lesson (20 minutes)
I. Let the students know that today we will be talking about our health and the health of the
environment
1. Show various items one at a time: plastic bag, plastic water bottle, banana, Styrofoam (rice
box), aluminum can, straws, peanuts
Ask the following questions for each item to the students:
- Is this plastic?
- Does it decompose?
- Can you recycle it (usually means uses again)?
- Can you sell it (this means recycle/will someone buy it and bring to the factory)?
After the students answer the questions about each item put the item in its designated pile
Compost Pile (items that naturally decompose)
-
Banana
-
Peanuts
It is important to say that these items do not need to be burned; they will turn into natural
fertilizer
Recycle Pile (items you can sell back to the factory)
-
Plastic water bottle
-
Aluminum can
Trash Pile (items that are usually burned and are used one time)
-
Plastic Bags
-
Straws
-
Styrofoam (rice box)
The purpose of the first activity is to have the students think about waste separation and to focus
in on how they can limit or decrease their use of Trash Pile items. Also later in the lesion to go
back to the Trash Pile and to explain how burning these items is very bad for our health;
suggesting burying as an healthier alternative.

zeros)
3.-7.) Show pictures to the students. Ask what animal is this?
