World Meeting of Families Prayer God and Father of us all, in Jesus, your Son and our Savior, you have made us your sons and daughters in the family of the Church. May your grace and love help our families in every part of the world be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel. May the example of the Holy Family, with the aid of your Holy Spirit, guide all families, especially those most troubled, to be homes of communion and prayer and to always seek your truth and live in your love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us! HOLY DOOR AT DIVINE MERCY PARISH Last week Pope Francis released a letter about an indulgence that will be granted to the faithful during the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy that will last from December 8, 2015 to November 20, 2016. An indulgence as you know is the extra-sacramental remission of the temporal punishment due to sin that has been forgiven. In other words, even after we have been forgiven of our sins through the sacrament of reconciliation, there are still the effects of our sins that we need to still somehow “make up for” and make reparation for. To give a clear but unusual example, if someone confesses to murdering someone in Confession and is repentant, God forgives that sin completely through the sacrament, “end of story.” But the effects of the sin are not easily wiped away. The family and friends of the victim, for example, are still suffering greatly, and it will take years for them to recover, if ever. All of the people who now do not have that victim in their life are changed and are deprived. We still need to atone for the effects of whatever sins we commit, either in this life or in Purgatory. Indulgences are granted by the Church through the exercise of the “power of the keys” of St. Peter and the Apostles that we hear about in Matthew 16:19. Through the application of the merits of Christ and of the saints, we can be relieved of this type of punishment either completely or partially. Indulgences are given for a just and reasonable motive, in this case presumably because Pope Francis feels that the world needs to experience God’s mercy at this time in a unique and powerful way. To receive an indulgence one usually needs to celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation, receive Eucharist and offer prayers for the Holy Father. One of the ways in which we can obtain this indulgence in the Extraordinary Jubilee ahead, which the Pope describes in this letter, is by making a pilgrimage to a Holy Door. There will be a Holy Door at St. Mary’s Cathedral in our Diocese and all Cathedrals of the world for example. But the Pope also allows for the Diocesan Bishop to choose other churches in his Diocese that the Bishop designates as a site for the Holy Door, for the convenience of the faithful. We at Divine Mercy Parish are honored and happy to say that Bishop O’Connell has designated our parish as one of the sites of the Holy Door! More details about this will be forthcoming. Moreover it is important to note that to receive this particular indulgence, in addition to walking to the Holy Door, in the words of Pope Francis: “It is important that this moment be linked, first and foremost, to the Sacrament of Reconciliation and to the celebration of the Holy Eucharist with a reflection on mercy. It will be necessary to accompany these celebrations with the profession of faith and with prayer for me and for the intentions that I bear in my heart for the good of the Church and of the entire world.” Being the site of one of the Holy Doors connects us to the Universal Church in a special way. I am looking forward to taking part in this great Jubilee Year ahead with you! Fr Dennis OUR GRATITUDE TO THE ALTAR ROSARY In the name of our parish family, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to the ladies of our Altar Rosary Society who have donated $5,000.00 for the repair of the Church organ. We are so grateful to you for your generous gift to the Church. May Mary continue to be your guide and support. Thank you. Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross September 14 After the death and resurrection of Christ, both the Jewish and Roman authorities in Jerusalem made efforts to obscure the Holy Sepulchre. The earth had been mounded up over the site, and pagan temples had been built on top of it. The Cross on which Christ had died had been hidden (tradition said) by the Jewish authorities somewhere in the vicinity. According to tradition, first mentioned by Saint Cyril of Jerusalem in 348, Saint Helena, nearing the end of her life, decided under divine inspiration to travel to Jerusalem in 326 to excavate the Holy Sepulchre and attempt to locate the True Cross. A Jew by the name of Judas, aware of the tradition concerning the hiding of the Cross, led those excavating the Holy Sepulchre to the spot in which it was hidden. Three crosses were found on the spot. According to one tradition, the inscription "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews" remained attached to the True Cross. According to a more common tradition, however, the inscription was missing, and Saint Helena and Saint Macarius, assuming that one was the True Cross and the other two belonged to the thieves crucified alongside Christ, devised an experiment to determine which was the True Cross. In one version of the latter tradition, the three crosses were taken to a woman who was near death; when she touched the True Cross, she was healed. In another, the body of a dead man was brought to the place where the three crosses were found, and laid upon each cross. The True Cross restored the dead man to life. In celebration of the discovery of the Holy Cross, Constantine ordered the construction of churches at the site of the Holy Sepulchre and on Mount Calvary. Those churches were dedicated on September 13 and 14, 335, and shortly thereafter the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross began to be celebrated on the latter date. R.C.I.A. VOCATION DISCERNMENT GROUP MEETING A Vocation Discernment Group Meeting is a wonderful opportunity to share how God is calling us to serve in His Church. In these sessions we talk about the issues that affect our vocation: How does God call us? How can I know where God wants me to serve Him? What is the life of priestly ministry? What are the qualities that make a holy priest? What is the formation process like? Through prayer, experience, and a strong dedication to one’s spiritual life, discernment emerges as a gift from God, leading us in the right direction. You are invited to share your journey with us in these discernment group meetings. Our next meeting will be held on September 20, 2015, at St. Pio of Pietrelcina, 103 Washington Avenue, Lavallette, N.J., 08735, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., hosted by pastor, Rev. Msgr. Leonard Troiano. The time will include prayer, sharing discernment stories, Q and A and a light meal.
