and Aeronautics, University of Patras
1. Description
The aim of this special session is to gather valuable and innovative contribution
in the field of design, planning and operation of manufacturing networks in the
era of mass customisation and personalisation.
The global manufacturing paradigm brings along several opportunities for
industries, whereas at the same time it creates inevitable challenges. The mass
customization trend and the emerging product personalisation needs have
nowadays become the reality for the majority of manufacturing companies.
Products and services must be offered with the right personalization options, at
the right time, to the correct customer group through the world. At the same
time, companies have to maintain low operational costs, while struggling with
the introduced complexity of the production and transportation activities
compounded by the volatility of globalized heterogeneous markets.
Such issues directly affect industries towards designing, maintaining and
redesigning effective and efficient manufacturing network configurations. In this
landscape, the identification of optimum manufacturing network structures is of
utmost importance for the viability of manufacturers. Moreover, the tasks of
product design, product family formation and product lifecycle management are
to be performed under highly volatile demand and unpredictable requirements.
Although an abundance of research work has been publish on the field during
the last two decades, accompanied with significant attention from industrial
parties a variety of issues remain unsolved.
2. Topics:
The objective of this special session is to provide an international forum of
industry and academia to discuss the issues, state of the art and future trends in
the field of Manufacturing Network Design, focusing on issues related (but not
limited) to:


