Welcome to UB and to living on-campus.

We encourage you to read this guide carefully and check out the web pages suggested. This guide is an abbreviated version of the check-in information, meant to minimize the number of pages you need to print. For additional information, please visit us on the web at http://housing.buffalo.edu/checkin.php

A little bit about your say…

You may be arriving before the Grand Opening of the Residence Halls to attend orientation. The halls will be very quiet before you arrive, but give it just a few days and you will meet many of the 7,600 students who live on-campus.

The Residence Halls at UB are corridor style- meaning long hallways with student rooms on each side. Most of our halls have common bathrooms shared with the other students on the floor.

Greiner, Goodyear and Clement Halls have semi-private bathrooms. Living in the halls is a great way to meet many other students and get involved in campus life as many activities are nearby.

The halls are an active and social place to be.

Getting Ready For Check-In

Before Move-in

Email your roommates to see what is already in the room. Refer to the What to Bring

Once you arrive at UB, have your photo identification such as your UB ID or passport in hand—you will need it to check-in.

Wheeled carts are available nearby all check-in stations. They are free to use. Take note: carts may be helpful in bringing items to the buildings, but some buildings do not have elevators.

Spring check-in will NOT be at your assigned hall. Check-in will be in a centralized location called an Area Office. This office is a front desk for several residence halls. We have 4 area offices, which one you will go to depends on your building assignment.

More information about check-in locations is below.

Check-in Locations

Look at the e-mail/assignment letter from Campus Living. Your assignment will list a hall. This hall and room number is your address at the university. UB has 2 campuses, the North and the

South Campus. These 2 locations are approximately 3 miles apart.

There are many routes possible to get your room. Look for signs and staff for directions.

The 2 nd

floor is known as the terrace or plaza level. This level provides an excellent view of the entire complex (if you get lost, head to level 2).

Each quad has at least 3 elevators.

>> If you are assigned to Clinton, Dewey, Lehman, or Roosevelt Hall , you live in the

Governors Complex on the North Campus. Your check-in locations is:

Governors Complex is located in the Buffalo suburb of Amherst, New York on Hadley Road between Rensch and White Roads.

These three-story buildings only have 2 small service elevators (located in Roosevelt and

Clinton) that will be in operation during opening weekend. The Clinton elevator is available all year long.

Tel. (Area Code 716) 829-3144

Main Street Residence Halls are located on South Campus near Main Street and Bailey Avenue,

Buffalo, NY 14214.

Clement and Goodyear Halls are high-rise towers with 9 floors and 2-3 elevators.

Getting Settled

Meet your Resident Advisor (RA). This is an upper-class student who lives on your floor and is there to assist you.

Review the Room Condition Report (RCR) for your RA. This is a form used to identify the condition of your room at move-in. It will be used at the end of the year to designate damage charges. It is important to inspect your room and make note of any existing damage on this form.

Break down your moving boxes and place them next to trash can areas in the hallway for recycling. There are also recycling bins located throughout the halls.

Never leave your belongings unattended and lock your room door when you leave.

Please note that UB is a smoke free campus and that many of the residence halls also prohibit drinking alcohol.

Attend New Student Orientation, if applicable.

Frequently asked questions

If I arrive before January 17 th , where can I stay?

If you arrive prior to January 17 th you will not be able to check into your room.

We strongly recommend making temporary housing options arrangements before you arrive. Your temporary housing options include staying in a hotel, at a friend’s home, or

UB student’s apartment. It is a good idea to contact your International Student Club to see if they provide any assistance to new students (list of clubs is available at http://wings.buffalo.edu/intlservices/clubs .)

Do you have a hotel you recommend (if I am arriving prior to January 17 th ?)

There are several hotels located near campus. You and your parents are encouraged to reserve a room early as availability is limited. The University at Buffalo website lists hotels, how to get to campus and various other tips: Go to http://www.buffalo.edu/uls/sponsorship/accommodations.html

for official information and rates.

How do I get to campus?

The University does not arrange for transportation to campus. We recommend that you check the website of the Office of International Student and Scholar Services www.buffalo.edu/intlservice/clubs . There you will find contact information for

International Student Club officers who may be able to arrange an airport pick-up for you. Please note that not all clubs provide this service.

If you cannot find your country on this list, or no one replies to your request for an airport pick-up, there are many taxicabs available at the airport (outside the baggage pick-up area.) The drive from the airport to the University is about 20-30 minutes. It will cost approximately $30-$40 to get to campus from the airport via taxi.

What if I wanted to cancel on-campus housing?

Prior to occupancy, residents who cancel their room reservation before December 1 st

are entitled to a refund of their housing deposit. After December 1 st

, only those students who are officially withdrawing or taking a leave of absence from the University for the upcoming semester will be permitted to cancel their housing agreement. Additional conditions and charges may apply for on-campus apartments.

Please note, if you cancel your housing request after December 1 st

because you do not plan on returning to UB for the upcoming semester, than decided at a later date to return, you may still be held responsible for your original Housing Agreement. Failure to contact

Campus Living does not release you from your original Housing Agreement.

The cancellation form can be found at http://housing.buffalo.edu/forms.php
