You will explore gems and minerals in the rough state, learn about tools and equipment used in the lapidary arts while learning how to cut and polish stones such as agates, jaspers, obsidians and more. No previous experience is needed. There is a maximum of 6 students in the class. In the first half of this class we will review some of the basics that you learned in Intro to Lapidary and we will teach you some new skills. You'll learn about cutting freeform and fancier shapes, using some fancier cutting rough, and making your own templates to create your own shapes. Feel free to bring in some of your unfinished projects for the second half of class and we can help you get them finished and polished beautifully. This class is perfect for getting some more practice cutting while we gently challenge you to expand your lapidary skill set. There is a maximum of 6 students in the class. There is a whole world of representational, abstract themes and text as well as texture that can now be incorporated in your work. Students will go home with many samples and new techniques learned. Enameling on Metal – Champleve’ • Pat Baker Wed. Feb 18th & Wed. Feb. 25th, 6:30–10pm, (2 days/7 hours) Tuition: $80.00 Registration closes Feb. 11th Materials Fee*: $30 paid to the instructor the first day of class Students will learn the enameling technique of Champleve’, a process in which the enamel is applied and fired in cells created in the metal. We will be etching copper to make the cells, then firing enamel powders in the cells to create a stunning pendant. finish a second project. Optivisor is recommended. Students will complete 1 stone-set pendant in this fast-paced course, building their confidence and skills in soldering and fabrication. An Introduction to Gold Working • Wayne Werner Saturday & Sunday, Mar. 21st & 22nd, 10am – 4pm (2 days / 12 hours) Tuition: $130.00 Registration closes Mar. 14th Materials Fee*: A materials fee of $20 will be collected for solder and alloy only. Additional cost will be for any gold purchased from the instructor for the class. (Cost will be based on market price plus shipping and milling fees). Students should expect the instructor to have enough gold to make a simple 2mm band or a dimes size worth of sheet. This class gives the student an understanding of how to work with gold. Students will explore how to test, re-purpose and recycle old gold from rings and other sources. They will also learn how to alloy their own gold as well as raise and lower the karat (purity) of gold. Students will be introduced to gold Soldering, and polishing. The material that we work with can be used to accent silver pieces or make a simple ring or pair of earrings. This class is open to all levels. If you can work with silver, you can work with gold. The instructor will have some 14k yellow gold on hand to purchase. He will also have some 24k (pure) to alloy and make some sheet from. Students are encouraged to bring in 'old gold' especially rings to recycle. If they want to purchase some gold to work with from a supplier, round wire (20-11 gauge) or flat sheet (18-24 gauge) would be fine. Students accenting silver should use 18k yellow (richer and good contrast). If they wish to work in gold alone, 14k yellow would be fine to use. Demos will be done on the first day, work time will be on the second day. Students who do not wish to participate on Sunday may choose to take only the demo day, however no discount is offered. Loop in Loop – Ancient Art of Chains • Pat Baker Saturday & Sunday, Apr. 11th & 12th, 10am – 4pm (2 days / 12 hours) Tuition: $130.00 Registration closes Apr. 4th Materials Fee*: $65 paid to the instructor the first day of class. Students learn to fuse fine silver loops without solder and to link them together to form a chain. Two patterns will be taught, to finish as earrings and/or bracelets. No previous experience is necessary. An optivisor is recommended. All tools and materials will be provided in class. Box It! • Pat Baker Saturday & Sunday, Apr. 18th & 19th, 10am – 4pm (2 days / 12 hours) Tuition: $130.00 Registration closes Apr. 11th Materials Fee*: $35 paid to the instructor the first day of class. Learn to make a metal (copper) box! Simple though it may seem, there are tricks and techniques to make your box unique! We will be using the rolling mill for texture and several flexible shaft (Foredom) attachments in the process. Learn how to make a lid that fits perfectly! What you put in your box will be your secret! Basic soldering skills are recommended. Please bring an optivisor. All tools and materials will be provided, although students are welcome to bring their own. *Posted material fees may be adjusted to accommodate the fluctuating cost of materials
