eHealth Institute Research Seminar December 6, 2010 10:00-12:00, coffee from 9:30, at the Kronan Hall, eHealth Institute, Bredbandet 1, Varvsholmen, Kalmar Musculoskeletal modelling and simulations of the lower extremities for surgical planning and rehabilitation of human motions Anders Sandholm, MSc, PhD-candidate, VRLab at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland Anders Sandholm is a former employée at the eHealth Institute and has been working on modelling and simulating of the human lower extremity, and in particular the human knee, in the European Union, 3D Anatomical Human project (http://3dah.miralab.ch/). Anders has also been involved in projects with Linköping University and Stanford University. Today, the field of neuromuscular simulations are widely used to understand underlying dynamics of human movements, from gait research, treatment of patients, surgical planning, to rehabilitation and improved sport performance. In the last years, several new advanced musculoskeletal models and platforms have been developed that can provide researchers, clinicians and trainers knowledge that were impossible before such as muscle activation and joint forces. In this talk, Anders will introduce the area of neuromuscular simulations and how it can be used in clinical treatment and sport science. First, he will make a short introduction to the area such as available models, simulation platforms and necessary hardware. Then, discuss how it can be used to evaluate motions and use this information to either plan surgical procedures or alter and evaluate motions to improve sport performance. In the second part, Anders will introduce two new knee joint models, one based on a mathematical approach and one based on magnetic resonance image data and how they predict joint forces compared to in-vivo orthopaedic measured data. After the talk, Anders will be available for discussions about motion capture, musculoskeletal simulations, models and how they can be used. Very Welcome!
