Brockelsby Census Records George William Brockelsby He is the husband of my father’s half-sister Edith. This document traces his family back three generations through his father Thomas (a hairdresser) and mother Annie, grandfather William and grandmother Anna and great grandfather Edward, using England censuses from 1911 back to 1841. There is one researcher who confirms this branch of the family tree – c.harrison@btinternet.com – in the World Family Tree lincroots. He has provided the marriage of George’s grandparents William and Hannah Atkin on 5 Jun 1832 in Boston, Lincolnshire; and of George’s parents Thomas and Ammoe Cornfield, and also has their siblings. 1911 Census 1911 census transcription details for: 44 Gordon Road Ilford Essex National Archive Reference: RG14PN9879 RG78PN521A RD191 SD2 ED30 SN171 Reg. He would be 10, so maybe away at school. The only Brockelsby born in West Ham Essex 1899-1910 is William Thomas H (2Q 1901, West Ham Essex Vol 4A Page 142. The address search didn’t work for Gordon/Ilford/Essex – only by making all counties search for Gordon/Ilford. I am not impressed with FYP census search. Neighbours: James Blake, also Secretary to Public Companies + wife, 2 ch , mother; Porter with family/servant; Electricity collector – govt Ilford; Truss Maker from NZ; teacher – ie middle class neighborhood. 1901 Census Name Relation BROCKELSBY, Geo Wm Head Married Secretary M 26 1875 Public Companies Holloway London VIEW BROCKELSBY, Edith May Wife Married F 26 1875 Bow London VIEW ASH, Emily Visitor (Sister In Law) Single F 33 1868 Sorter G P O Mile End London VIEW RG number: RG13 Piece: 1650 Folio: 7 Registration District: Sub District: Romford Ilford Civil Parish: Ilford Where Born Original census image Birth Occupation Condition Sex Age Year Disability Page: 5 Enumeration District: Ecclesiastical Parish: 15 St Marys Municipal Borough: Address: County: 44, Gordon Road, Ilford Essex © findmypast.co.uk Notice that Edith’s second name is mis-spelled, and George is shortened to Geo, and that causes the normal search for these names to fail. However, it does indicate that he preferred his middle name William, and that the William Thomas H. I searched for all of the George Brockelsby born in 1873-1876 – he was the only one spelled with the el – the others were all born in Yorkshire/Lincolnshire and spelled Brocklesby. 1881 Census Name Relation Condition Sex Age Birth Year Occupation Disability Where Born Original census image BROCKELSBY, Thomas Atkins Head Married M 41 1840 Master Hairdresser BostonLincolnshire VIEW BROCKELSBY, Annie Wife Married F 31 1850 Croydon Surrey VIEW BROCKELSBY, Tom Son Single M 15 1866 Assistant Boston Lincolnshire VIEW BROCKELSBY, George Son Single M 6 1875 Finsbury Park Middlesex VIEW BROCKELSBY, Anne Daughter Single F 4 1877 Finsbury Park Middlesex VIEW BROCKELSBY, James Edward Son Single M 3 1878 Finsbury Park Middlesex VIEW BROCKELSBY, Lilian Mary Daughter Single F 1 1880 Finsbury Park Middlesex VIEW GREGORY, Harry Coaton Assistant Single M 25 1856 Assistant Hairdresser Leicester Leicestershire VIEW RG number: RG11 Piece: 259 Folio: 19 Page: 31 Registration District: Islington Sub District: Islington East Enumeration District: Ecclesiastical Parish: Civil Parish: Islington Municipal Borough: Address: 208, Seven Sisters Rd, Islington © findmypast.co.uk County: Middlesex George’s father Thomas (if my suspicion is correct) was a master hairdresser, had an unrelated assistant living with his family, and also employed his older son 15 yr old Tom as an assistant. I am fairly certain that this is the right family – there were only five other Georges of similar age, all spelled Brocklesby, and all living in Lincolnshire (Caistor, parents Leonard (Grimsby) & Hannah; N. Kelsey, parents William (Caistor); Scawby, parents John (Scawby) and Mary; Scampton, parents George (NK)& Elizabeth) or Yorkshire (Sheffield, parents William and Sarah). I have searched for family in the Islington area in 1871, but they all come from Hull, Yorkshire and are spelled Brocklesby, whereas Thomas Atkins is from Boston, Lincolnshire – about 25 miles from Hull. 1871 Census I first searched the 1871 census for Brocklesbys in Middlesex/London and found three related families, all born in Hull, Yorkshire: James (1843) and Margaret Ann (1845), servants to Samuel Baxter, Marine Engineer Manager, and their 2 children Ada Ann born in 1865 in Yorkshire, and Arthur James b. 1871 in Middlesex. James (1831) and Elizabeth (1832) carpenter, railway porter in 1881 with a baby Henry b. 1871 in Middlesex and 3 older children born in Yorkshire. George J. Brocklesby solicitor and Fanny – he born in Hull, Yorkshire, with 3 children born in Middlesex and 2 servants. The two James families live only a few streets apart in Upper hollingway, Finsbury, Islington with middle class neighbors, and George lives in Lower Hollingway, Finsbury, Islington on Camden Rd, more upper middle class. I am guessing that the later families came to London in search of work, with the assistance of the solicitor, who must be related. I am not sure that they are related to the Thomas Atkins Brockelsby family, which is spelled differently, and come from Boston, Lincolnshire. I couldn’t find Thomas Brockelsby in 1871 census by his name, nor could I find Annie by the name Brockelsby, so probably this is before they were married. I did find his mother Hannah and father William in Boston with his deaf dumb blind sister – here called Sally. I also found Tom Brockelsby, probably Thomas’ son, but maybe not with Annie. He is staying with friends, relative?
