To promote the safety, well-being and self-sufficiency of children, adults and families.
Volunteer Services works to connect our partners and individuals with volunteer
opportunities designed to help the community and enhance the effectiveness,
productivity and the quality of DES services.
Some of DES programs that provide volunteer opportunities include: Adult Protective
Services, Child Protective Services, Child Support Enforcement, Development
Disabilities, Employment and Rehabilitation Services and Family Assistance.
Clerical assistants, bilingual aides, client advocates, drivers, interns, special aides
among others.
Everyone is welcomed to volunteer for DES, however, there are some prohibitions. For
example, Individuals convicted of certain criminal offenses are not eligible to
volunteer. Some volunteer work assignments may require a background check and
others fingerprinted for clearance cards. Also, individuals under 18 years need written
parental permission. Volunteers are required to complete DES computer-based
trainings for HIPAA, Basic Security Awareness and Limited English Proficiency before
they begin their work assignment.

Helping our communities’ most vulnerable with solutions that permanently improve
lives.
We have six basic programs:
1) Paths of HOPE (Help Out of Poverty forEver) is a Catholic Charities volunteerfacilitated program that helps motivated individuals and families get out of poverty
forever through financial education and resource building.
2) PATH (Projects for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness) conducts outreach
services to the homeless who are seriously mentally ill. Services include, but are not
limited to, outreach activities, field assessments and screenings, housing referrals,
transportation and moving assistance, community education, and assist members
through their transition into the case management system.
3) Foster Care & Adoption provides foster and adoptive homes where children can be
safe to develop positive self-esteem, and the inner strength to enable them to grow
into confident and well adjusted adults.
4) The Family Partners program works with families that are referred through Child
Protective Services.
5) Emergency Shelter and Transitional Housing helps homeless individuals and
families move into and maintain a stable housing situation by coordinating community
services and resources for them, such as job development and mental health
treatment.
6) Families F.I.R.S.T. (Families In Recovery Succeeding Together) is a program that
helps parents address substance abuse issues that are affecting their ability to care
appropriately for their children or to get and keep a job.
Paths of HOPE needs Class Facilitators, Site Coordinators and Childcare.
PATH is looking for individuals to help with homeless outreach.
The other programs need office support.
Depends on program and volunteer involvement. Do not need to be Catholic, Christian,
or religious to volunteer.

Our mission is to improve lives by mobilizing communities to make lasting changes in
community conditions. We do this by investing in three action areas: Education,
Income and Health. We believe that everyone deserves opportunities for a good life: a
quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family through
retirement, and good health.
United Way of Northern Arizona focuses on the building blocks for a good life:
EDUCATION: Helping children and youth achieve their potential, INCOME: Promoting
financial stability and independence, and HEALTH: Improving people’s health. In
accordance with this, we offer programs in each of these areas, including KinderCamp
and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). KinderCamp helps children
develop skills in areas of literacy, social-emotional and cognitive development while
supporting the successful transition of the entire family into kindergarten. The VITA
program helps qualifying individuals and families receive their Earned Income Tax
Credit (EITC). VITA also provides information to individuals and families for financial
resources in our community.
United Way of Northern Arizona offers volunteer opportunities through the Volunteer
Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program and Community Investments as well as seasonal
volunteer opportunities such as Holiday of Lights and Mountain Campus Holiday Arts
and Crafts Fair. For the VITA Program, volunteers are needed as tax preparers,
screeners, and translators of Spanish and Navajo. Training is provided for all volunteer
positions, with tax preparation training resulting in certification by the IRS to prepare

taxes. Training is also provided for Community Investment volunteers as they focus on
allocating community funds to organizations within the community.
No previous experience is needed for our volunteer activities. Where training is
required, United Way will provide volunteers with training along with any materials
necessary. Volunteer commitment varies by opportunity. For example, the VITA
Program asks for a minimum volunteer commitment of 4 (4 hour) shifts throughout the
tax season.
