Notes from last Meeting – accuracy and Matters Arising
The notes are accurate.
Matters Arising:
1. Keith Hardcastle has an interview on 9th May to become a lay member of
the Ethics Committee. The TAG wished him luck and hopes his experience
and commitment to the RIG and R&D TAG helps him with the interview.
2. Peer Reviewer Role – this needs to be looked at again as there hasn’t
been a good response. Mike suggested a specific mail shot and will look to
devise a mailing list.
3. Research Excellence Award – the research category was agreed by the
EMT last year. The criteria for the awards is still being determined by the
Directors so Rebecca is waiting further information on this.
5
R&D TAG Terms of Reference
The Terms of Reference were looked at in detail and various amendments
were suggested. To be discussed at one of the R&D business meetings and
signed off by Dr Booya once the changes have been agreed.
6
Research Department Update – Rebecca Spencer
Annual Performance Report: this covers the last financial year (April 2013March 2014). Points to highlight are:
 The approval target is now 15 days from receipt of a full research
application including a submitted Site Specific Information Form (SSI),
this is a change from 30 days.
 The number of participants recruited into research has increased from
the previous year and the Department has exceeded the network target
of 750 for Portfolio studies, recruiting 917.
 The marketplace induction stand was very well attended but as this is
now ending due to a different approach by the Trust for employee
inductions, it was suggested that the communications team may be
able to help with a video for the e-learning induction. The RIG may
have a lead role on promoting the importance of service user and carer
involvement in the research process. It would be useful to know what
other departments are doing instead of a marketplace induction stand.
 In 13/14, SWYPFT has been the highest recruiter to portfolio studies
across the Yorkshire and Humber region. It would be helpful to know
how the Trust compares with other Trusts for commercial research, this
may happen in the future and will be included in future reports when
the information is available.
 The R&D department now do a lot of feasibility work prior to a study
being given R&D approval such as, engaging with services, setting a
realistic recruitment target and making sure the local research team are
clear about their role and ‘research ready’.
 The R&D department promotes a meaningful range of research
opportunities including new treatment and assessment options for
patients.



Network funding has been maintained at the same budget as last year
and a letter has been sent to request further funding.
Action Plan for 2014/15 – it was suggested to develop Trustwide
Pharmacy support for clinical trials so patients across the whole trust
can access any new trial drugs. This could be discussed at an
upcoming R&D link meeting in May.
Harmonised Approval Process Pan Yorkshire (HAPPY)
This is a harmonised process for research governance checks and will closely
follow the Health Research Authority assessment. The current update is that
Round 1 of a Delphi consensus survey has been distributed and completed by
Research Departments and relevant partner organisations. Awaiting feedback
from this.
Research & Development Intranet Page
This has recently been updated, the internet will also be updated in the near
future.
Research & Development Quick Guide
A quick guide for researchers outlining how to gain Trust approval is being
developed, this will be a two page leaflet design and will be helpful and
concise information on the approval process for researchers.
7
Yorkshire & Humber Clinical Research Network (YH CRN)
Caroline Pickstone has been appointed as Chief Operating Officer and Dr
Simon Howell and Dr Alison Layton have been appointed as Clinical Directors
on an interim basis.
Partnership Group – Dr Kraam
Dr Kraam attended a meeting in March, he was aware that an annual plan
had been submitted which would need to be agreed centrally. The group still
feels very much in a transitional stage and the membership needs to be right.
Division 4
Mike had attended a meeting recently where there were impressive
presentations on current RCTs from Professor David Cotterell and Professor
Simon Gilbody. The RIG were also mentioned during a presentation as part of
examples of good practice of service user and carer involvement in research.
8
Research Studies Report Update
Mark Pinkerton and Stacey Phillips attended to update on the portfolio
studies:
MIFCOG: There is a possibility that this will cease due to lack of external
researcher availability to conduct a vast amount of trial. The study team are
working on a solution and a meeting will then be arranged to discuss the
viability of the study continuing.
Genetic Variation in Learning Disabilities: Study currently on hold and is
seeking funding.

3
OCTET: This has been very successful and is now in follow up. Recruited 33
participants (target was 8).
ROCHE: First commercial trial which successfully exceeded the recruitment
target. This is very promising for future commercial studies as the Trust is
more likely to be selected as a site by other commercial sponsors.
First Steps: The first round of recruitment was very poor, however a new
process was put in place for the second round and recruitment was much
more successful and run smoother.
ALTO: Certain arms to the study have now been closed by the study team
therefore although the study has recruited well it is possible the target will not
be achieved.
Rebecca is currently looking to find new portfolio studies to be set up and
recruit in 2014/15.
9
Research Bids and Collaborations – Mike Lucock
SMART bid to Health Foundation: This bid got through to the second round
but did not receive funding.
ENRICH: Enhanced Discharge from Impatient to Community Health Care –
this is led by Dr Steve Gillard from St Georges University London, it is still
going through final stages of reviews so Mike will update on the outcome at a
future meeting.
Physical health of people with serious mental illness: Dr Andrew Clifton,
University of Huddersfield, is working on a literature and scoping review with
Hannah Jones from Nottingham University and Mike Lucock. The aim is to
develop an RfPB bid in 2015.
BME Bid: This would be a collaboration with Dr Waheed from Manchester
University and may explore what the barriers are for black and ethnic minority
communities accessing IAPT services. Lubena Mirza and Wajid Khan have
started working together on a potential bid.
EMPIRIC: This is a possible future trial led by Professor Simon Gilbody,
University of York. It would involve the IAPT and COPD services in Barnsley
and is around psychological support offered to COPD rehab patients. Both
services are supportive of the project and would be an excellent joint
collaboration across Trust services. At this stage the Trust has only
expressed interest in principle.
10
Research Involvement Group (RIG) – Keith Hardcastle
Keith attended to update on the RIG meetings since the last TAG. The group
now has ten members and this ensures a wide range of views, opinions and
perspectives. Researchers who have attended have found the experience
and advice invaluable in making their studies good quality.
Keith has represented the RIG for the past year and will now hand over to
Wendy Mertens. He thanked the TAG and has enjoyed being part of the
meetings commenting that he has been made to feel welcome and his
confidence has been boosted.
Mike thanked Keith for his valuable
contributions to the TAG over the past year.

Research Celebration Event on 30/06/2014 – Stacey Phillips
This event is planned to celebrate portfolio and non portfolio research from
the previous 12 months, Principle Investigators and Local Collaborators will
be invited to join the Research Team for the event to be given a certificate of
their contribution to research signed by Dr Booya. Everyone who is involved
in a study such as a recruiting clinician, nurses and admin staff will also be
posted out a certificate of appreciation for their contribution. This is an exciting
event to promote research in the Trust. There will be several short
presentations and Mike Lucock agreed to be Chair of the event. It is hoped
that the event may be annual and general feedback from attendees will be
collected. It will also be covered by Communications who will take pictures on
the day.
