About Ali Curung
Ali Curung is a Kaiditch (Kaytetye) word meaning “Country of dogs” or
“Dog Dreaming”. The story relates to an area of land ancestral dogs
visited while travelling around the country. The community adopted the
emblem of a dog to signify the importance of the ceremonial story.
Warrabri was established in 1956 under its original name of ‘Warrabri
Settlement’. The community changed its name to Ali Curung in 1978.
There are four main language groups: Warlpiri, Warumungu, Kaiditch
and Alyawarra
Population
It was estimated in 2011 that Ali Curung had a population of 535 people
of which 95% were Indigenous.
Power and water
Electricity is supplied by a diesel generator. Chlorinated and fluoridated
town water is supplied by bore, and waste water is treated in sewerage
ponds on the outskirts of town.

Air
No commercial flights operate; however charter flights can be arranged and a landing strip is
located within a few kilometres of the community.
Road
The community is located 170 kilometres South of Tennant Creek within the Warrabri Aboriginal
Land Trust. The turn off to Ali Curung is east off the Stuart Highway just south of Wycliffe Well.
Travel 20kms down a single lane sealed road to reach the community.
Local government
The Barkly Regional Council provides local government services in Ali Curung. Its headquarters
is located in Tennant Creek, with a Service Delivery Centre located in Ali Curung.
Land tenure
Ali Curung land is Aboriginal Land under the NT Land Rights Act (NT) 1976.

Alekarenge Horticulture Pty Ltd (AHPL) has self-contained dormitory style accommodation for
12 people, located 1km from the community at the AHPL Training Centre. Facilities include two
accommodation blocks, a separate ablutions block with laundry, a fully-equipped commercial
kitchen with cool rooms, and a dining room/classroom. The Training Centre compound is
fenced.

Arlpwe Art Gallery
Visitors to the gallery have the opportunity to meet the artists and watch them work thanks to
Arlpwe's "Artists in Residence" Initiative. Authentic Aboriginal artefacts, paintings and artworks
can be purchased at the gallery. Many of the artists create Central Desert style paintings
depicting ceremonial body designs and traditional dot painting landscapes.
