It would be beneficial to read and understand this document before completing this form. 1. Briefly describe your experience as an Engineer Surveyor and the range of plant you examine. This is your opportunity to describe your role on a daily basis. Please explain how you have developed in your role over time and how you would approach an item of equipment you have not seen before. While demonstration of skills covering a range of plant is important, the approach to unfamiliar items is equally important. 2. Describe how you maintain and extend a sound theoretical approach to the application of technology in engineering practice. Please outline how you keep up to date with emerging technology such as new models / types of equipment, new inspection techniques etc. All Engineer Surveyors have a base minimum qualification but how do you build on this to ensure you have the skills needed to perform an excellent inspection. If you have any specialist customers in your area that have unique equipment, how have you learnt to deal with inspections on this equipment. You should also provide evidence of an effective CPD plan. 3. Describe how you apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to the Engineer Surveyor role. Include any innovative solutions you have devised to overcome specific inspection issues. Please outline how you apply your skills, where appropriate, to help customers through the full cycle of plant operation (Design, Develop, Manufacture, Construct, Commission, Operate, Maintain, Decommission and Recycle). Are there any areas where you have had to overcome specific obstacles to ensure a safe and effective examination is achieved? Please include examples where you have used both theoretical and practical skills to overcome an inspection issue. 4. How do you provide technical and commercial leadership? This does not necessarily mean you have to have formal leadership responsibilities but please outline any instances where you have led a project, managed a budget, outage programme or dealt with a complex inspection or customer. All surveyors take ownership of issues associated with inspections and this should be identified here. 5. Describe how you use effective interpersonal skills to communicate with clients, colleagues and other engineering professionals. Engineer Surveyors are required to have the skills to communicate both verbally and in writing at a variety of levels ranging from reception staff, technicians and company directors. Outline how you tailor your communication style for these different levels with examples. Please provide any examples where you have used these skills to influence a customer or one of your colleagues. 6. Describe your commitment to improving professional standards in the industry. How do you contribute to the engineering profession? Please explain how you promote the status of “Engineering” within the industry and the wider society. Describe how you engage other engineers in training or general discussions to improve the awareness of the role of an Engineer Surveyor. Any contribution to either the SOE or other institutions should be outlined here. 7. Why do you think you should win this award?
