VolTra is dedicated to promoting international voluntary services in Hong Kong through a well-established worldwide network of international workcamp organizations. VolTra together with other international workcamp organizations all over the world provide over 3,000 international workcamps and voluntary service projects every year in more than 100 countries. At the same time, VolTra also organizes international workcamps in Hong Kong for both local and overseas volunteers to participate in the voluntary services and cultural exchange activities in Hong Kong. CA, founded in 1968, is the non-government environmental organization with the longest history in Hong Kong. A nature conservation management project for Long Valley has been organized since 2005, which aims to conserve Long Valley’s landscape and biodiversity through a series of active habitat and species management measures. Voluntary work: 1. Rice and crop harvesting work 2. Weed and apple snail removal work 3. Wildlife monitoring work In the farming hut . The living environment is very simple and basic but in a peaceful rural living style. Sleeping bags and mat required. Long Valley is located at the northern urban edge of Hong Kong. With a total area of 150 hectares, it is the largest agricultural freshwater wetland in Hong Kong. Hong Kong International Airport Very basic living condition in the nature. Outdoor physical work. The Conservancy Association (CA) is dedicated to the protection of the environment and the conservation of natural and cultural heritage. CA’s mission is to enhance the quality of life of both this and future generations, and to ensure that Hong Kong shoulders her regional and global environmental responsibilities. We achieve this by advocating appropriate policies, monitoring government action, promoting environmental education and taking a lead in community participation. Fishery industry is a dying in HK where it was a fishing village hundred years ago. Many of the traditional culture and history have been forgotten. Our aim for this project is mainly to educate public the culture and history of fishery industry in Hong Kong. Voluntary work: Accommodation 1. Beautify the village’s environment 2. Participating in cultural exchange activities 3. Repairing fish nets 4. Feeding and catching fish 5. Guiding visitors On the floating dock. The living environment is very simple and basic. (100 Euro to be paid on arrival to cover the on arrival training expense for MTV for HKVT04-15) Local Organizer Situated at the beautiful Sok Kwu Wan on Lamma Island, Lamma Fisherfolk’s Village is a showcase of the local fisherfolk culture and the history of fishery industry in Hong Kong. Occupying an area of over 20,000ft², the Village comprises authentic fishing junk, traditional dragon boats, an exhibition hall, themed folklore booths, fishing rafts and dwellings. Visitor can learn and appreciate the heritages and livings of the boat community of Hong Kong. The aims of Ta Kwu Ling/Ping Che Alliance for “Saving Our Home” are to protect villagers’ home and culture and to conserve the environment. Currently, the government and the villages are in discussion on the North East New Territories New Development Areas Planning. Voluntary work: 1. Beautify or renovate of village road or houses 2. Rehabilitate agricultural land 3. Assist in community liaison Accommodation Workcampers are accommodated in village house of vistors’ centre. Sleeping bags and mats are needed. Location In contrast to the densely populated areas of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, Ping Che is a sub-urban area characterised by natural scenery, charming small villages and stunning sunset. Noted guests, Ada Yip, Freddy Law and Lawrence Lui shared on the topics of “storytelling, marketing for social innovation and effective communication among stakeholders . 40 Participants also engaged in various free discussion, such as "How to nurture global citizen?" , "How to turn ideas into actions?"etc. 2015/01 Hong Kong Weekend Workcamps Fishermen’s culture on the Island 2014/09 & 12 The project is co-organized by VolTra and Lamma Fisherfolk’s Village. Volunteers help restored educational facility on the floating port. Ping Che Beautification Workcamp Besides beautifying the local community by painting and harvesting the eggplants from the farmland, Volunteers also enjoyed local vegetables, beautiful sunset scene as well as warm-hearted rural culture. We also organized bilateral project with NICE Japan in this site. 2014/3 Hong Kong International Workcamps Long Valley Rice Harvesting Workcamp 2014/07 This is the 4th Rice Harvesting Workcamp co-organized by VolTra and Conservancy Association. During the 10 days, 7 volunteers from the United States, Thailand, South Korea and Hong Kong experienced furious rainstorm while harvesting and rice transplanting, but they all tried their best to complete their tasks and achieved a great success. Long Valley Harvest Festival Workcamp 2014/12 This two-week Harvest Festival workcamp was co-organized by VolTra and Conservancy Association during Christmas and new year holidays. Volunteers from different countries assisted to set up, decorate and operate booths as well as transport facilities and materials for the Harvest Festival. Besides, they helped the local farmers on crop harvesting to support their living and conducted ecological monitoring work to conserve the local environment. 7 Wing Lung Terraced Field Reform Workcamp 2014/06& 2014/12 VolTra and Hong Kong Community Development Network coorganized Wing Lung Terraced Field Reform Workcamp twice this year. To pass on the traditional terraced field heritage in Sai Kung, volunteers were responsible for terraced field reform and weed removal work, organic herbs and fruits harvesting work, renovation of camp base and taking care of guard dogs. They acquired much knowledge about local agriculture and built friendships with others. Ping Che “Saving our home” Workcamp 2014/08 Painting, renovating for the old village community. It is a controversial area where the government planning to develop and destroy the nature.
