In my former life, I was a _____________________________ (your profession before you became a zombie-vampire-or-ghost servant), but now I’m a servant of the Addams family. . .for eternity (diabolical laugh). But my most important skill is _______________________ (name and demonstrate your third skill). As you see--(pretends to hear a noise. Calls.) Coming, master. (To audience.) Thank you. Monologs for Lead Role GOMEZ: Aaaaaahh, the intoxicating smell of the graveyard. Once a year, we gather here to honor the great cycle of life and death. Come, every member of our clan. . .living. . .dead. . .and undecided. Come celebrate what it is to be an Addams. (To Morticia.) Come to me, my luscious wife—oh she of skin so pale, eyes so black, and dress cut down to Venezuela. Come tell us what every Addams hopes for! FESTER: That’s right. Little Wednesday Addams—that charming, irrepressible bundle of malice who would poison her own brother just for a ride in the ambulance—has grown up and found love. You may ask, who is this lucky fella? Is he worthy of her? Do they really love each other? What is love anyway? Does this rash look serous to you? So many questions about love. But when you think about it, is there anything more important? LUCAS: I know where we are! It’s where I first saw her. I was lost in the park and a pigeon dropped at my feet with an arrow in it. And I looked up and there she was. . .Wednesday. . .with a crossbow! (Sees his father’s horrified reaction.) It’s okay, Dad. She has a permit. GRANDMA: Hi. I just came from the hospital. Cardiac ward. Boy, they’re dropping like flies over there. I hope you’re staying in shape, honey. Grains, fresh fruit, 40 minutes on the treadmill? (Listens for Alice’s answer which is no.) No? Then you’re a gonner, honey. PUGSLEY: Grandma, what if there was this girl who met a person and he’s all like, “It’s the Pugster. What up, little man?” and she’s all like “golly” and “we’re gonna go now” and they’re running away together. What potion would you give her? (Grandma says, “Nothing.”) Nothing?!? But what if she doesn’t get rid of him? What if all the good times are already behind me? 9|Audition information for ADDAMS FAMILY ALICE: (Sweetly) When I’m depressed or feeling blessed A poem will get it off my chest. They come to me, they take no time, They just pop out and always rhyme! (Drinks the potion and turns into a raging witch) What do you mean, I’m not myself? We’re in the middle of a game. So button your lip and sit your butt down! Remember how it used to be, Mal? How we’d look at each other and leave the restaurant in the middle of dinner and rush home and race upstairs and. . .(sees her son’s horrified reaction) Lighten up, Lucas, Parents do it. Live with it! (To MAL.) Remember, Mal? When we were crazy and the future didn’t exist? What happened, Mal? The guy with the Grateful Dead t-shirt—is he ever coming back? How long do I have to wait? MAL: Okay, Addams, I tried. I thought, “Okay, our kids like each other, let’s give it a shot.” But you people are insane. You’ve got a house where there shouldn’t be a house, a zombie for a butler, and a man who’s dating the moon. . .Mister Addams, we’re simple people. We’re not used to your “sophisticated New York lifestyle.” So with your permission, we’re gonna go back to the real America. Lucas, help your mother off the table. MORTICIA: I gave up my dreams for the sake of this family. I wanted to travel. I wanted to see Paris. I’ve never seen the sewer of Paris. And now it will never happen. So this is how it ends. . .alone and forgotten in a tiny room, living on cat food and broken dreams. That’s what happens to mothers. Look at yours. She came for the weekend, the weeks turned into months, and now it’s twelve years later and she still up there: Deceived. Deluded. Smoking weed in the attic. (A beat.) A grandma! Well, I’m not going to end up like your mother. WEDNESDAY: Can you keep a secret? (Shows her engagement ring.) Lucas Beineke loves me and he wants to marry me! Now, I’ve never even met his parents, and he’s never met mine, and. . .I just need to be sure that the families can get along. I mean, he needs to know what he’s getting into. Don’t get upset. All I’m saying is that we’re who we are, and they’re from Ohio. 10 | A u d i t i o n i n f o r m a t i o n f o r A D D A M S F A M I L Y Specific Character Information and Vocal Ranges Male Leads GOMEZ: A man of Spanish descent who takes great pride in his family and revels in all it means to be an “Addams.” He struggles with having to keep his daughters secret from his wife, whom he adores more than death. Smart, comedic actor with tenor vocals. Needs to look older. UNCLE FESTER: The androgynous family member who serves as the musical’s narrator. He is larger than life, an energetic, joyous, child-like presence. A vaudeville style comedian with tenor vocals. LURCH: A very tall male character, the Addams butler who knows all. He speaks in moans and groans without becoming a cartoon version of himself. His movement is always very slow. Character actor with a low bass vocals to Eb. MAL BEINEKE: Stuffy father of 19-year-old Lucas and exasperated husband to Alice. At one time was a follower of The Grateful Dead but has lost that side of himself. Always looking out for his family. Male actor with high baritone/ tenor vocals. LUCAS BEINEKE: A 19-year-old man. Fell in love with Wednesday Addams and plans to marry her. Experiences the youthful pain and drama of young love and struggles with the differences between his family and the Addams family. Contemporary pop tenor vocals. Lead Roles Open to Both Guys and Girls GRANDMA: A feisty 102-year-old woman. Fun and quirky, but don’t mess with Grandma. Comedic actress with strong character vocals. This part can be played by either a girl or a guy (following the great British tradition of casting male actors as comic, elderly female characters). PUGSLEY ADDAMS: 12 years old. A charming, funny, husky boy who loves being tortured by his sister. He wants to ensure he won’t lose his sister to her new boyfriend so he takes matters into his own hands. Strong, high vocals. Voice not yet changed. Since Pugsley’s voice hasn’t changed, this role may be best played by a young-looking girl. This is also in the British Christmas pantomime tradition in which girls play roles of young boys (e.g., Peter Pan, Dick Whittington, etc.) Boys whose voices haven’t changed will also be considered for this role. While Pugsley is a stout boy, the actor playing the part does not need to be stout—we can add padding. Female Leads MORTICIA ADDAMS: The strength of the family. An easy comedic actress with a sexy, dry wit. Feels her husband is hiding something from her and will use any tactic to lure the secret out. A strong dancer with alto/mezzo soprano vocals. 11 | A u d i t i o n i n f o r m a t i o n f o r A D D A M S F A M I L Y WEDNESDAY ADDAMS: Wednesday is an 18-year-old girl who has the same dry wit and sensibility of her mother. Finds love with a “normal” boy (Lucas) and wants to introduce his family to hers. Experiences the youthful drama that comes with first love. Lucas can actually put a smile on her face. Strong pop belt vocals. ALICE BEINEKE: Mother of 19-year-old Lucas, devoted to her family so she puts aside her own desires. Quirky female who often speaks in rhyme. While at the Addams Family dinner party, she drinks a potion that causes her to let her hair down and speak her truth. Comedic actress with soprano / belt vocals. THE MOON: Non-speaking, non-singing actress who dances in one number with Uncle Fester in which he reveals his love for her. Glamorous, mysterious. Should be able to dance on pointe. GROUPS THE ANCESTORS: Male and female ensemble singer/actor/dancers who are smart performers and have a fun, quirky sensibility. On stage for most of the show. SERVANTS (Zombies-vampires-ghosts): 9-10 singers who also appear in several musical numbers and some scenes. No lines. Distant Relatives: 4-8 performers who don’t need to dance. These will play bizarre relatives (such as a two-headed girl, a man carrying his own head, etc). While we are looking for strong singers for most of them, a few may be wearing masks which will prevent them from singing. ELLERS: Dance chorus in “Tango d ‘Amour” and the opening number. (Female Ellers will also appear in the “Secrets” dance.) Ancestors or Servants who dance well may also be cast as ELLERS. CREATURES OF THE NIGHT: Actors who appear in the closing numbers of each act and who also serve as in-character ushers. No lines. Sing with the full cast in a couple of numbers, but basically a non-singing, non-dancing ACTING part. Cousin Itt: Non-singing, non-dancing, acting role.
