Cities100 Factsheet / November 2015 / page.1 Cities100 Fact sheet on Cities100, a publication identifying 100 city policy solutions ready to be scaled across the globe, proving that cities are in the lead on global climate ac tion. Nov. 2015 What is Cities100? Cities100 is a new publication that identifies 100 leading policy solutions within ten different sectors, serving as a guide to policies, programs and projects all over the world that seek to create a resilient and productive urban environment. The solutions have been chosen after reviewing more than 216 submissions from 94 cities across all regions in the world. Through direct contact with leading city officials and an extensive social media campaign, C40 and Sustainia invited cities all over the world to submit their solutions online over the summer of 2015. The 100 solutions point to the reality that meaningful action can, and is, being taken outside of the national arena. City governments are smaller, more nimble than their national counterparts, and regardless of wealth or resources, size or location, cities around the world are demonstrating they have the power to take action to protect their citizens and infrastructure from climate change, while at the same time adapting their policies to the needs of a resource-efficient world. The publication can be downloaded for free at www.sustainia.me/cities Who is behind Cities100? Cities100 is with a collaborative effort, developed by C40, a network of the world’s megacities, Sustainia, and the philanthropic foundation Realdania. C40 connects more than 80 of the world’s greatest cities, representing 600+ million people and one quarter of the global economy. Created and led by cities, C40 is a non-profit organization focused on tackling climate change and driving urban action that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and climate risks, while increasing the health, wellbeing and economic opportunities of urban citizens. Realdania is a modern philanthropic association that works to create quality of life and benefit the common good by improving the built environment: cities, buildings and the built heritage. Realdania is both a Strategic Founder of C40 and a Founding Partner of Sustainia. Sustainia is an international sustainability think tank working to identify and secure deployment of sustainable solutions that improves quality of life around the world. Based on tangible know-how and technologies, Sustainia demonstrates the sustainable future we could achieve if existing solutions were implemented on a large scale. What sectors does Cities100 cover? The solutions in Cities100 cover ten sectors: Green Energy, Solid Waste, Adaptation Planning & Assessment, Adaptation Implementation, Carbon Measurement & Planning, Building Energy Efficiency, Cities100 Factsheet / November 2015 / page.2 Finance & Economic Development, Smart Cities & Smart Community Engagement, Transportation, and Sustainable Communities. How are the Cities100 solutions selected? Each application has been carefully evaluated by the C40 and Sustainia urban professionals, using a scoring system based on the following criteria: Expected or achieved level of success with climate change targets Level of innovation in addressing major environmental issues Co-benefits of the project that have contributed to its success Demonstration of good leadership and governance Potential to replicate and scale the project More information on the evaluation criteria and scoring system can be found here. How is the publication being launched? By identifying 100 readily available solutions for cities, the Cities100 partners wish to highlight the potential for transformation ahead of the much-anticipated climate change negotiations, COP21, in Paris from November 30th to December 11th, 2015. That is why the Cities100 publication is launched online on November 19th, 2015 in the lead up to COP21 and will also be presented at the Sustainia COP21 event on December 6th, 2015 in Paris.
