1. Objectives of Assessment Activity:
Outcome 3: Understand the requirements for stabled and grass-kept horses.
Stable and yard design, environmental issues, planning and provisions, current legislation documents. Field
checks and Maintenance.
2. Scenario and Student Task(s):
The environment in which we keep horses can greatly affect their health and well-being. Stable yards,
paddocks and arenas all have to be of a certain standard in order for our horses to remain safe.
Considering this it is important that we not only focus on the essentials necessary for life, but on those small
differences between a safe and unsafe environment.
Task 1: (M3) Analyse the layout of a selected stable yard with reference to environmental
considerations
Create a plan of a new internal yard design for Friars Hill. Compare your new plan to the existing
arrangements at Friars Hill, giving advantages and disadvantages for watering, feeding, stable materials,
size of stables, tack room security, storage areas, muck disposal and positioning, legislation for muck heaps
and waste disposal. Include fixtures and fittings, and safety requirements within the design. Explain and
analyse how this new environment would be beneficial to that of current arrangements (M3)
Task 2: (D2) Evaluate a given stable and yard environment and the duties carried out in terms of
environmental, costing and legal considerations, recommending valid improvements where relevant
As a yard inspector, it is important to look at things from all angles. For this task you will need to complete a
final inspection evaluating all aspects of Friars Hill stables.
This needs to cover stables and yard environment and the duties carried out in terms of environmental
issues, costing (expense) and legal considerations (current legislation).
You will then need to make clear and relevant suggestions for improvement, linking to the comments that
you have made during your evaluation. (D2)
