UNIVERSITY OF WEST LONDON JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Associate Professor in Healthcare Management (0.4FTE) Faculty/Department: Business School / College of Nursing Midwifery and Healthcare Post No: Grade: G8 – Associate Professor Location: Paragon Responsible to: Director-The Business School & DeanCollege of Nursing, Midwifery & Healthcare Responsible for: Research Assistants linked to specific initiatives SUMMARY OF MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB The Associate Professor (Healthcare Management) will bring together expertise from the Business School and the College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare to create a multidisciplinary research and enterprise base. Specifically: Providing research and academic leadership in healthcare Increasing scholarship activity through the expansion of interdisciplinary professional doctorates Supporting both Business School and College of Nursing, Midwifery & Health to actively pursue opportunities for research & enterprise related activities Leading the development and implementation of innovative curricula, in consultation with key stakeholders Undertaking consultancy, research and research related activity DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Strategic Enhancing academic and research leadership within the Business School and the College of Nursing, Midwifery and Health, by providing a coherent vision for interdisciplinary healthcare management Providing advice to the Director (BS) and the Dean (CNMH), in developing research capability and capacity in academic staff Providing leadership and delegated line management, to appropriate School and College academic staff e.g. Research staff (when appointed) & PG Programme Leaders and any other staff assigned by the Director (BS) and the Head (CNMH). This includes undertaking appraisals, setting targets and managing performance Ensuring effective communication and encouraging staff engagement with the University’s research strategies, policies and major programmes of work Acting as an ambassador for the School and College in a range of external environments and ensuring that they are positively portrayed at all times, in order to grown the reputation of the University Supporting and promoting research translation across the University, clinical and other users of healthcare evidence and research through effective communication Encourage, support and facilitate professional activity, identifying and pursuing research and enterprise funding for the School and College and the wider university. To work with and support the work of the Director(s) of Research within the School and College in translating the vision and plan for each of these Operational: 1. To work with the Director and Dean to significantly grow the research income. 2. To increase external collaborative research and knowledge transfer activity regionally, nationally and internationally. 3. To develop an active research culture that fosters the highest achievements, encourages originality and innovation and enriches the student learning experience. 4. To engage in teaching and learning within the School and College 5. To capture detailed information of all research undertaken and identify funding and knowledge transfer opportunities. 6. To promote research links and engagement within the School, across the University and with external organisations. 7. To implement University-wide strategies and policies for research and to maximise the impact of research performed within the School 8. To identify new research opportunities which have potential for significant growth and to liaise with departments on associated grant and contract submissions. 9. Make significant contributions to PG teaching in the Business School, the College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare and across the University 10. To work with the Director, the Dean and the PVC Research & Enterprise to ensure the strongest possible submissions for future Research Excellence Framework assessments. Academic development Work with INSPIRE and the Graduate School to develop practitioner-based degree programmes and recruit quality students Network and represent UWL healthcare management externally as required and contribute to building the University’s profile and reputation with NHS and other strategic partners nationally and internationally PERSON SPECIFICATION CRITERIA Qualifications: ESSENTIAL DBA / PhD in a relevant discipline Master in a relevant subject DESIRABLE Registration with either the NMC or BSP HEA fellowship Knowledge and Experience: Experience of doctoral supervision Extensive experience of conducting research and/or enterprise activities A demonstrable track record of securing and managing externally funded research Experience of patient and public involvement in research including ethics and governance Experience of mentoring early career researchers An international profile in healthcare management A demonstrable track record of working successfully with academic colleagues and external stakeholders to deliver strategic objectives Significant experience of NHS and Healthcare systems Specific Skills: Strategic thinker with a demonstrable track record in developing sustainable healthcare research and educational programmes of national / international standing Bid management (including identifying funding opportunities, coordinating research teams, writing grant and bid submissions, monitoring and evaluating programme performance against targets) Publication and research dissemination skills to ensure research impact is maximised An understanding of contemporary policy issues in health management and education Evidence of implementing and managing change successfully Familiarity with University planning cycles and experience of contributing to strategic planning processes General Skills: Ability to prioritise workloads effectively, balance conflicting deadlines within fixed timescales Excellent interpersonal skills; an assured and confident communicator The ability to operate effectively within an interschool context A collegiate and facilitative leadership style which motives colleagues and gains their trust and respect Sound judgement and practical problem-solving skills The ability and willingness to maintain focus, take difficult decisions and to deliver Energy, resilience and high levels of motivation, diplomacy and tact Strong intellectual resources Other: An Enhanced DBS Certificate (to be undertaken upon appointment) This post is a joint appointment between the Business School and the College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare and will be instrumental in developing a new cross disciplinary research base drawing on the expertise that exists within health, business and psychology. The post holder will demonstrate professional standing and a demonstrable track record in securing research funding and contributing to the body of knowledge in a specific field. Essential Criteria are those, without which, a candidate would not be able to do the job.
