Autumn 2015
Richard Deacon’s exhibition ‘This is where ideas come from’ is on at Wolfson College, and features 16 of his models for large-scale sculptures, dating from 1989 (two years after he won the Turner Prize) to the present, none of which has been exhibited before. The show’s title comes from a lecture Deacon gave at
Wolfson in 2002, and cumulatively the works offer a unique and unprecedented insight into Deacon’s conceptualisation and realisation of abstract sculpture. Our visit will be introduced by Professor Phillip
Lindley, who worked with the artist on the curation. Meet at 2.30 pm at Wolfson. Tickets £12.

We have the opportunity of visiting a house in west Cambridge known to have existed before 1777, but since then much altered, notably with the addition of a spacious artists’ studio built for three illustrator brothers in the early twentieth century. The studio is still used as a creative space by the current owners.
Their collection of works of art and a diverse assortment of objects is spread throughout the living space.
Meet at the house at 10.30 am – details will be provided. Tickets including refreshments £12.

The Ben Uri art museum celebrates its centenary this year with a major multimedia exhibition at Somerset
House. Reflecting themes of art, identity and migration, ‘Out of Chaos: 100 years in London’ will explore
100 years of emigré history through the works of European artists of Jewish descent, including Chagall,
Soutine, Auerbach, Bomberg, Epstein, Grosz and other interesting, if less well known, artists. At Somerset
House there will also be the opportunity to visit the 1.54 Contemporary African Art Fair, and/or works by
Bridget Riley and Peter Lanyon at the Courtauld Gallery (extra cost £6). There are various lunch options in the area (not included). Afterwards, we go to Tate Britain for ‘Barbara Hepworth: Sculpture for a Modern
World’. The first major retrospective in London for many years, this exhibition will feature some of her most significant sculptures in wood, stone and bronze – including two loans from Kettle’s Yard – alongside rarely seen works in other media.
Depart Trumpington Road coach stop opposite the Botanic Garden at 9.45 am / Clerk Maxwell Road at
10 am. Return by about 7 pm.
Tickets £41 / Art Fund cardholders £35 / Tate Members £28.
