Y4/5 Curriculum News Letter. Dear Parents, We have an exciting half term to look forward to and lots of new things to learn about. The children should now be settled into their new class and they should now be clear about the expectations in an older year group. I am hoping that the children will make lots of progress this half term and produce lots of good work. I hope that you have all now got the targets that we are working towards in Literacy and Numeracy that were given out at parent’s evening. I am offering another date for parent’s evening on Thursday 13th November and letters have now been sent out. I will be giving out the targets at these meetings. In Literacy we will be working on our targets with a focus on grammar and punctuation. The children will be learning how to use apostrophes, noun phrases, fronted adverbials as well as some of the other areas that are on the target sheets. I would recommend that you get your child a grammar and punctuation dictionary- I have the details of a good one so please ask me. The children should now be writing very neatly and using capital letters and full stops in every piece of work including homework. Please try and check your child’s homework to make sure that they are writing neatly and using capital letters and full stops. If they are using the basic punctuation we can move them on to the more challenging targets that they need to be achieving. Writing is a very important part of our lessons and the children should be starting to take pride in their work. In Science we will be learning about forces. We will be learning about friction, air resistance, water resistance as well as learning how to use a force meter. We will be carrying out investigations and learning how to use the scientific vocabulary in our work. In R.E we will be learning about Judaism. We will be learning about Anne Frank and touching on the Holocaust. This will be taught sensitively and if you have any concerns please speak to Miss Ellis. It is important that the children do learn about how people from different religions have been treated in the past. We will be continuing our topic about WWII and in particular a focus on the children during this time. We will continue reading Adolphus Tips by Michael Morpurgo and I will be encouraging the children to read WWII stories. We will be writing letters and recounts as part of our work about Tatton Park. The children will get homework every Tuesday that needs to be handed in on a Thursday and on a Friday that needs to be handed in on a Monday. The children will also get their spellings every Monday and they will be tested on a Friday. I will also be giving the children a Larky star if they read 3 times a week at home to an adult and have their reading diary completed with a comment by an adult. P.E will continue to be taught on a Friday. The children will be doing gymnastics and endball. The children need their black shorts or tracksuit trousers and a white t-shirt for every lesson. The children now look very smart in their P.E kits and team games are working well when we wear the coloured bibs. The children will be expected to do P.E outside throughout the winter and they need a pair of trainers with a good grip. The children need to bring a clear water bottle with a sports top to school so that they can have access to a drink during the day. It disturbs the children’s learning if they have to go out of class to use the water fountain so we do discourage this. If you have any queries about your children’s learning please call into school to speak to me. Thank you Mrs Clark Deputy Headteacher
