Topic: TRAVELLING.
Level: Pre-Intermediate.
Aims:
- to develop pupils’ language skills;
- to develop pupils’ communicative and listening skills;
- to develop pupils’ creative thinking and intellectual
abilities;
- to practice topical vocabulary;
2
Procedure.
1. Introduction. Warm up.
Travelling is always very interesting and exciting experience for everybody. We
may travel not only abroad but also around our country, our town or village. Now
let’s see what the quotations of famous people say about travelling.
T: What do you think of the following quotations and proverbs? Agree/Disagree.
“When a man is tired of London he is tired of life”
(Samuel Johnson)
P: People who are really fond of travelling will never be tired of anything. Speaking
of London even English people who live in London can find something new. So an
average tourist would never be disappointed if he had possibility to visit London
again and again. What I am trying to say is that you cannot be tired of new sights
because it gives new experience. Life for me is new experience every day. So I agree
with this quotation.
“When in Rome do as the Romans do” (proverb)
P: When we travel we learn new culture and new people. The purpose of travelling
usually is to find out new things which we did not know before. It is very important
to learn new things in order to respect other cultures. Of course we cannot know
everything about the culture of the county we are visiting, but we have to respect it.
Different countries have different customs and traditions, and we should respect them
when we are there. The same things should do tourists from other countries when
they are visiting our country.
“The traveler sees what he sees the tourist sees what he has come to see”
(G.K. Chesterton)
P: This quotation is probably about two different kinds of people who travel.
According to these words we should differentiate between the traveler and the tourist.
The traveler is a person whose main goal is the process of travelling itself, while the
tourist’s purpose is to see what he already heard about.
“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page”
(St. Augustine)
3
P: When we travel we really feel like reading. Every new country and every new
corner of the world is one more read page from the book of life. That is more we
travel, more books we read.
“When preparing to travel lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then take
half of the clothes and twice of the money”
(Susan Heller)
P: This sounds like very practical peace of advice. Those who travel a lot really
know what they are talking about. It is much easier to travel light because you do not
have to carry heavy bags. In case you need something, you can always buy it. So do
not spend much money on packing your bags. Save them instead and then you‘ll be
able to buy necessary things.
2. Listening. Watching video “Travel Tips”. Writing.
T: We may travel by different means of transport and every time we travel we
forget something. Now we are going to watch a video which is called “Travel
Tips”. We’ll learn some useful information from it. I hope you will like it. Before
watching it let’s do some vocabulary work and get acquainted with some words
which you will come across.
Pre-listening task: vocabulary work.
T: Guess the words from their definitions. (Pupils get cards with the definitions, read
them and try to define the words)

T: Listen attentively and make the check list in written form. Write what the most
necessary things are, which you may need while having a flight.
P-ls are listening and watching while making notes.
Then pupils present the check list which they have learnt from this video.
Post-listening task:
T: And now let’s watch it again and do the matching task.

2) toothpaste;
3) smth. to suck (candy);

3. Speaking.
a) T: Speaking of signs and notices… While travelling even in our every day
life we see different signs and notices and it is very important to know what they
mean not to get into awkward situations. Now let’s find out if you know them
and understand what they mean. If there are any you do not know or see for the
first time I will help you to find out what they mean.

NO SMOKING (You are not allowed to smoke here)
EMERGENCY EXIT (In case of emergency you are recommended to go out here)
LITTERING PROHIBITED (Do not litter here)
FASTEN BELTS (We must fasten the belts)
WAY OUT (We can use this way to go out)
SMOKING SECTION (You can smoke here)
ATTENTION (Please be very attentive)
b) T: Now when you know all the signs, let’s imagine a true to life situation where
you need to explain the meaning of these signs. So make up dialogues without
preparations. (Pupils go to the board in pairs, choose the sign and dramatize their
micro dialogues.)
Pair1.
A: Excuse, me! Could you help me to open this door? I have been trying to open it for
15 minutes already.
B: Oh, I am sorry friend. Try another door. The sign over there says “NO EXIT”.
This means you cannot go out this way.
Pair2.
A:I am very sorry to bother you, sir, but you cannot smoke here. There is a sign over
there which says “NO SMOKING”.
B: Oh, right you are. And where can I smoke?
A: Find the sign “SMOKING SECTION”, please.
Pair3.
A: Oh sweetie, stop eating your candies and throwing rolls on the floor. Littering is
prohibited here or anywhere else? B: Does this mean I mustn’t litter here? But I am
so fond of candies especially when I am nervous.
6
4. Role Play.
T: Now let’s imagine some situations where you have a conversation with a
travel agent about your future trip.
The teacher divides students into groups of 2; shuffles all the cards; gives one
card for each group; explains to the students that the groups which get “Travel
Agent” cards should play a role as the travel agents which have to offer their
Holiday Package to the tourists as interesting as possible.
The “Travel Agent” should consider the tourists preference and budget.
The groups which get situation cards should play role as the tourists and have
to act according to the situation given on the cards.
The tourists should consult all the travel agents before they choose the best
travel agent, which can offer them the most interesting package. Teacher
reminds the students that the tourists are not allowed to take things for granted,
since they want to have a splendid vacation. They have to consult everything in
details.

5. Checking the homework.
T: Now you are almost ready to travel. You know what to take with you, you
know the signs and notices and you have your extraordinary baggage tags. If
you could pack your luggage tomorrow where would you take a flight and why?
What are the places you would like to see there?
P-ls have prepared one minute speech with power point presentations about the
places they would like to visit. (Power Point presentation is added)
6. Mime game.
T: Now let's relax and play a little bit and still learn. Mime game will help us in
this.
8
Pupils are to mime the situations which they get on the cards. Music background is
provided in order to feel more relaxed. The pupil goes to the board takes the card
with the situation he is to mime and tries to mime it. The rest of the pupils have to
guess what kind of actions they are showing.
You have
lost your
ticket
You are
taking
pictures.
You carry
heavy bags.
Your luggage
disappeared
6. Group work.
You are
late for
your
flight.
Comparing and justifying.
Pupils play in groups. Two groups against each other. Each group gets a card. Group
A must think of reasons why the A idea on the card is better or more “in” than the B
idea. Group B must do the same for their idea.
So the pupils have to convince that their kind of transport is better for travelling then
the opposite one.
The teacher should explain that the main tasks of this activity are:
-
to show the advantages of the chosen kind of transport;
to prove that you are right without offending the opponent;

Advantages of travelling by car:
-
-
you can control when and where you go, sleep or eat and for how long you
would do these things;
you aren't on anyone schedule;
you can enjoy travelling by taking photos of fantastic view;
travelling by car is much cheaper;
when people use their own car, they just pay for fuel;
9
Advantages of travelling by train:
-
-
-
travelling can be very enriching;
you may meet other people;
you may see new landscapes;
the train gives you the opportunity to watch the landscape passing by;
you may see woods, birds, rivers, lakes, ponds, various animals while traveling
over the land; then you see trees, roads, people who work the land;
you will also see that people who are on the same wagon, might change in the
course of the journey;you may want to talk to them or just to watch them. It
depends on you. If you are anxious and get anxiety attacks during a trip, you
may be able to talk to someone and be taken by that conversation;
travelling by train can be entertaining;
Advantages of travelling by plane:
-
-
-
-
-
it is much faster to travel by plane; it is possible to cross to the other side of the
world in less than a day.
it is now possible to easily go to places that would previously been too far
away for most of us to travel to.
when you are looking for a safe way to travel from one place to another, air
travel is near the top.
it is now possible to get to destinations all over the world at very affordable
prices because of the availability of cheap flights.
airplanes can be quite comfortable and this makes it a nice way to travel.
Advantages of travelling by bus;
-
-
-
-
-
this transport is significantly cheaper and convenient, even at long distances.
the quality of travel is good, because modern buses are equipped well to be
able to offer passengers a quiet and pleasant trip;
the buses have comfortable seats, air conditioning, toilet, TV and nice music,
offering basic food and drinks during the long time;
while travelling to your destination, you can enjoy music or watch an
interesting movie, read a newspaper or book;
if you're tired - you can rest comfortably on the seat and sleep;
you can move by bus across different cities because briefly you can see the
most beautiful sights there;
you do not need to drive or to think about the way of what the location is or
where;
10
-
on the bus you will meet various people, with many of them you can find
common topics of conversation and eventually to become friends - you never
know who you will encounter and how things will develop, but a new friend
made during the trip is not redundant to anyone;
Advantages of travelling on foot:
-
it is the cheapest way of travelling;
it will help you to keep fit;
you may see picturesque landscapes and sceneries;
you may take as many pictures as you can;
Advantages of travelling by bike:
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
it is a fun, healthy and economical means of travel around the neighborhood;
you can get where you want, when you want, all on your own steam;
it is often quicker, than other forms of transportation;
no car door to unlock, no engine to start or warm up, no seatbelt to put on, no
need to stop at a gas station to fuel up;
when you arrive, take 10 seconds to fold the bike & place it in a bag to take
inside with you;
fast enough to feel a cooling breeze yet slow enough to experience and enjoy
the scenery (be it a city, a town, a small village, rolling countryside or absolute
wilderness);
tourists can modify their itinerary, deviating onto very small routes that would
be impossible otherwise
if you're getting tired or the weather's changing, you can always throw your
bike in a bus or a taxi;
no worries about high costs of fuel, no parking fees (or fears of your car being
stolen, damaged or breaking down);
leave when you want, stop at a restaurant or restroom when you please, pull
over & shoot that awesome photo;
Advantages of travelling by ship:
-
-
a cruise ticket is pretty much all-inclusive;
you are on a cruise, you don't need to worry about the logistics of getting to
your next destination, because you can just enjoy your time on the ship while
the cruise staff takes care of all of the details;
you can participate in while you are on board;
it is a great way to strengthen relationships with family and friends, or meet
new friends;
