EMPLOYMENT AGREEMENT
This Agreement is made between the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin and
_____________, Director of Religious Education.
The Church, acting through its Board of Trustees, employs _________ as Director of
Religious Education (DRE) under the terms set forth in this agreement. ___________
accepts such employment under the stated terms, subject to adopted policies and
procedures except as expressly provided herein.
1. Effective date. This agreement shall begin August 1, _____, and shall continue until
changed or terminated. Either party may terminate this contract by giving 30 days
written notice.
2. Compensation. The Church shall provide the following compensation:
A. Initial Salary: The Church agrees to pay the DRE $_______ per year.
B. Benefits: to be paid in accordance with personnel policy.
C. Professional Expenses: Including conference travel, fees, room and board; journals,
books, subscriptions; continuing education; and all normal and usual business related
expenses, payable directly or as reimbursement to the DRE. Payment will be made
upon receipt of itemized vouchers up to the amount of $_______ per calendar year.
D. Review: The Board of Trustees, with the assistance of the Minister and the Personnel
Committee shall review the compensation package annually. The Board will
recommend to the congregation adjustments in compensation considering the DRE’s
assistance in achieving the goals of the Church, performance of duties, and the
general cost of living. Any amendments shall be by addendum to this agreement.
E. Moving Expenses: Reimbursement up to a maximum of $______ upon receipt of
itemized voucher for a move to Austin before ___/___/___.
3. Duties and Responsibilities. The DRE shall assist in achieving the goals of the
church using as a guideline the tasks outlined on the attached job description, which
is incorporated in this agreement by reference. Job priorities will be determined by
the DRE in consultation with the Minister and Board of Trustees.
A. Time: This is a full-time position, requiring an average of 40 hours per week. At least
25 hours a week must be spent at the church. Remaining duties may be performed
either at the church, at home, or elsewhere, as appropriate.
4. Leave. The DRE shall be provided annual paid leave as follows:
A. Four weeks of vacation;
B. Four weeks of professional leave to be used to enhance her professional capacities; to
attend denominational meetings and professional associations; or to provide
leadership for religious education programs.
C. The DRE may be free of responsibilities one additional Sunday per quarter.
D. The DRE shall be granted one month of sabbatical leave for each full year of service,
not to exceed six months and not to be taken prior to the completion of five full years
of service from August 1, _____. A sabbatical plan, including the length of any given
sabbatical, must be approved by the Minister and the Board. Sabbatical leave is to be
used for professional development. Following a sabbatical leave, the DRE agrees to
complete at least one full year of service to the Church.
E. Dates of absence must be coordinated with the Minister.
5. Miscellaneous. a) This contract contains the entire agreement among the Parties and
supersedes all prior oral or written agreements, commitments or understandings with
respect to the matters provided for herein, and no modification shall be binding upon
the Parties affected unless set forth in writing and duly executed by each Party
affected. b) This agreement shall be construed and enforced in accordance with, and
the rights of the Parties shall be governed by the laws of the State of _____. c) Any
controversy, claim, or breach arising out of or relating to this Contract which the
Parties are unable to resolve to their mutual satisfaction shall be settled by arbitration
in ________, _____, in accordance with the rules then in effect of the American
Arbitration Association and judgment on the award rendered may be entered in the
court having jurisdiction thereof.
