DRE: Developmental Reading and English Marsi Franceschini DRE 098 Discipline Chair What is DRE? DRE is North Carolina’s Developmental English and Reading program. Students who are not “college ready” take DRE courses at the Community College. DRE Courses DRE 096, 097, 098 are 3 credit hours and 8 weeks each DRE 096 DRE 097 DRE 098 ENG 111 Classes include 5 hours of lecture and 2 hours of lab per week. Course Overview: DRE 096: Integrated Reading and Writing I DRE 097: Integrated Reading and Writing II DRE 098: Integrated Reading and Writing III Reading and interpreting 9th 10th grade texts Reading and interpreting 10th - 11th grade texts Reading 11th -12th grade texts Writing effective sentences and paragraphs Writing effective paragraphs and essays Writing effective essays and basic documented essays NC Grading Requirements Grading Mastery DRE courses are Mastery Grading Pass/Retake. Students earn a P or R at the end of the course. Students must demonstrate course appropriate reading and writing mastery in their DRE course. Mastery is 80% CPCC DRE Mastery Requirements: All classes have the same requirements: 1. Overall Course Average of 80% or above 2. Final Reading Exam grade of 80% or above 3. Final Writing Assignment grade of 80% or above Revisions and Retakes Students have one chance to revise all formal writing assignments to enhance learning and improve their grade. Students have one chance to take an alternate version of the reading tests (including the final exam) if they earn below an 80% on the initial test.
