Course Convenors’ Preparation for 2014-15

This document sets out an initial overview of Course Convenor key tasks needed in the runup to the start of the new academic year. It is available on the Graduate School staff intranet in the Course Information section at: http://www.sps.ed.ac.uk/intranet/teaching/info_for_pg_teaching/course_information

You will hear from your Course Secretary in early July which room you will be teaching in.

All taught MSc programmes have a programme handbook and a Degree Programme Table

(DPT), (a University requirement and is visible to staff, students and applicants which lists all the courses on each degree programme and links through to the EUCLID course descriptions. http://www.drps.ed.ac.uk/14-15/dpt/drps_sps.htm

Programme Directors update these.

Course Convenors are responsible for updating the academic course information in two places:

1.

SHORT DESCRIPTION

Please check the short description of your course/s (available via DRPS here http://www.drps.ed.ac.uk/14-15/dpt/cx_s_su809.htm

and also through EUCLID) and let your Course Secretary know of any changes. Your Course Secretary can then update on

EUCLID. Please make sure the short description is up to date, matches the title, and is attractive, as students and applicants look at this when deciding which courses to take.

We also have more user-friendly School course webpages at http://www.sps.ed.ac.uk/gradschool/course_information - the content of which is fed through from the course information on DRPS/EUCLID. These are updated in early July and are accessible via an A-Z listing, an s1 and s2 listing, and via the Programme microsites.

Deadline for updating – Monday 14 th July at the very latest, and earlier if possible.

Applicants and arriving students look at our course information so this needs to be updated by the end of June.

COURSE HANDOUT

Please update the more detailed academic content of your Course handout. If you wish to see samples of other course handouts, these are on the web or ask your Course Secretary.

Deadline for Course Handouts – Fri 29 th August for s1 courses, Monday 1 st December for s2 courses. Please submit to your Course Secretary, and please do not miss these deadlines – your Course Secretary needs time to check the administrative and standard information, and to have the course handout available for new students during induction week.

Notes:

If you wish to change the name of the course, the assessment, or the content to the degree that the learning outcomes would change, this ought to go to the Board of

Studies. If there is insufficient time for this, the Director can approve on behalf of the Board. See: http://www.sps.ed.ac.uk/intranet/teaching/info_for_pg_teaching/committees_and_ meetings/graduate_school_board_of_studies

Of particular note for new courses - If any Programme Directors wish to list your course on their DPT, they should ask you before doing this. You may also wish to publicise your course to Programme Directors by asking your Course Secretary to send a short description to the Programme Directors mailing list.

The School course webpages and the timetable are updated by the GSO in early July.

Note the latest submission dates for coursework: s1 Thursday 11 December 2014 s2 Thursday 9 April 2015
