DARTFORD GRAMMAR SCHOOL
Head of Drama
The Drama Department has two full-time teachers at present. The school offers the
International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme in Key Stages 3 and 4 and the
International Baccalaureate Diploma in the sixth form. In Key Stage 3, Drama is part of the curriculum for all students. It is a popular option at GCSE. In the Sixth Form, Theatre
Arts is available within the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at Higher and Standard Levels. A second sixth form course, Literature and Performance, offered as one of the IB Diploma Language A1 options at standard Level, has a heavy emphasis on performance and is increasingly popular.
Facilities
The Department’s teaching rooms are within the Mick Jagger Centre for the Performing
Arts, which contains two performance spaces (seating 350 and 150 respectively), a main drama studio, practice rooms and exhibition space. The Department is well-provided with resources, and strongly supported both by the Governing Body and the Parents’
Association.
Extracurricular Provision
The Drama Department makes a considerable and important contribution to the school’s extra-curricular provision. For example, there is a Key Stage 3 Drama Group and a Youth
Theatre. Each year, students take part in the Shakespeare in School Festival (which is held in the Mick Jagger Centre) and there is an annual school play or musical.
Community Provision
The Mick Jagger Centre is unique as a sub-regional arts centre situated within a school.
Our drama performances benefit from its excellent sound and lighting equipment. Its programme of professional performances brings world famous practitioners to the school. 21 community groups are based within the centre. The Centre is constantly looking at ways to increase participation in and enjoyment of the expressive arts.
