Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation September Bulletin September will be upon us soon. In September is a busy month with special days. September 7 is Labor Day, September 11 is Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance, September 13 is National Grandparent’s Day, September 17 is Citizenship Day, September 18 is POW/MIA Remembrance Day, September 23 is the first day of Autumn. There is a lot of things your unit can start working on in your community. Do not forget about the American Legion Auxiliary Tracking Form for members. We need you to write down your service hours to the veterans and the projects you do in the community. If you do not have a form let me know. Reminder: New Orleans Stand Down on October 24. Jackie needs non-perishable food, toilet items, new under clothes or donations. Send money donation to Department headquarters ear mark your check New Orleans Stand Down. The Sixth District will hold a Stand Down on November 7 in Baton Rouge. The district will need the same items that Jackie does. Reminder: Take your wine glass at your meeting and fill it with your donations to our veterans. An award will be given to the unit that sends in the most donations and an award will be given to the District that sends in the most donations to our veterans. If you do not have a special wine glass please contact me and I will get one for you or your unit. October project is Buddy Baskets for the homeless veterans. This is items that a veteran would need in normal life. Such as: combs, hair brushes, tooth brushes, tooth paste, soap, deodorant, etc.. Put these things in a special bag for the veterans. This is called Buddy Baskets (Please your name on the basket.). Remember the special VA awards: VA Care Giver, VA Helper Award. Thank the units for your continuing support our veterans. Veterans designation on driver license, Yes, just bring your driver license and a copy of your DD214 to get it put on your license. 2. Discounted fees and taxes—Free hunting and fishing licenses for disabled veterans, military retirement exempt from state income tax, property assessment frozen under a certain income for 50% service-connected disabled veterans. 3. Education discounts—100% tuition exemption at any state institution of higher (reservist), tuition exemption for dependents of veterans with a severe service-connected disability or veterans who died during active duty during a war time period. 4. Restaurant discounts: Applebee’s—discount varies per location, simply ask and have a valid military ID with you. Ci-Ci’s Pizza—discount varies, dependent on location, must present military ID. Cracker Barrel—10-15 percent off, at manager’s discretion. Dairy Queen—10 percent off, location dependent. Denny’s—discount varies, simply ask and have valid ID with you. 5. Retail discounts for military and veterans: Advance Auto Store—According to their website they offer 10% regularly priced items for in-store purchases to customers who serve or have served our country’s Armed Services. Auto Zone—10% off your purchase. Bed Bath & Beyond—Flat 10% off discounts for veterans and their families. Varies from store to store. Best Buy— Varies from store to store, but many retail locations offer a 10% discount to vets. Just ask a Best Buy sales associate about it. Big Lots—Be sure to shop on Veteran’s Day every year to take advantage of their military discount. Home Depot—All year long military personal, active or retired, can get a 10% discount at the home Depot. Just gotta ask for it and show proof. Lowe’s –they will give a flat military discount of 10% to all active and retired military personal. Remember more discounts to come. Look forward for more information for our veterans.
