Energy from floating algae ponds
Jonathan Trent describes OMEGA- Offshore Membrane Enclosures for Growing
Algae, a module built offshore, which will be used to grow microalgae from waste
water. Microalgae are a single-celled organism that can produce biofuels in mass
production, which not compete with water, fertilizer or land. Photobioreactors
or PBR is a tubular, flexible and floating structure made from inexpensive plastic
will be used to circulate waste water and a source of CO2. Microalgae grow by
getting nutrients from wastewater, sunlight, consume CO2 and produce O2.
Microalgae are biodegradable. With the environment, it helps seaweeds and other
organism growths, enhance marine habitat and increase biodiversity due to
surfaces provided by the modules. Research is ongoing to study the biology of the
system; the way algae grew; what eats the algae and what kills the algae, including
engineering on how to build and run the system due to its enormous scale.
