DIVERSITY RESOLUTION WHEREAS, the proportionate presence of African-American and Black, tenuretrack faculty is a critical issue affecting the College’s mission toward academic excellence and true inclusiveness, WHEREAS, the College has not significantly increased the presence of AfricanAmerican, and Black, tenure-track over its long institutional history, WHEREAS, the failure to hire and promote African-American and Black, tenuretrack faculty is a systemic one which cannot be effectively addressed by individual departments or persons, WHEREAS, African-American and Black faculty are hard-to-hire par excellence, WHEREAS, the College has permitted going off the faculty salary scale for other hard-to-hire faculty, WHEREAS, detailed production and consideration of relevant data, formulation of an effective plan of hiring, and commitment to a timeline are essential to hiring appropriate numbers of African-American and Black faculty, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Academic Senate form a special task force to: 1) address the issue of hiring African-American and Black faculty; 2) study the advisability of going off the faculty salary scale when necessary in order to hire hard-to-hire, African-American and Black faculty, and 3) submit, upon investigating and consulting with other pertinent campus and off-campus resources, an independent report, including recommendations for further action, to the Senate.
