DESCRIPTION This is an eight-week course designed to build on the knowledge of English which students will bring to the class. This is the first of four Bridge courses, intended to help non-native English speakers make the transition to using English as a primary language in an academic setting. English Grammar will be examined through lectures, discussions, exercises, writing and editing. Homework will consist of supplementary exercises. Quizzes and examinations will test practical ability. 2. OBJECTIVES GENERAL To prepare students to gain confidence in their ability to speak and write of English accurately and fluently, reinforcing and expanding knowledge of the grammatical structure. SPECIFIC Use English grammar structures accurately and be conversant in the meta-language of grammar. Identify parts of speech in a sentence. To Foster independence in recognizing grammatical errors and selfcorrecting in speaking and writing through ability to use meta-language Compare and contrast English grammar with their native one To understand how grammar works and be able to apply it accurately and fluently 3. METHODOLOGY This course essentially shows English grammar as a whole, focusing exclusively on grammar issues and their application to written communication. Structure shows the building and layering process of grammar, from the simplest noun and verb structures to truly complex grammatical formulas, thus consolidating prior learning and introducing new information within a meaningful and Communicative Approach. Students therefore become sufficiently conversant in the meta-language of English grammar enabling them to use it as a tool: to interact with their English professor about writing improvements, to effectively edit their own work, and to ultimately become better writers in English. 6.
