Three to five business days after applicants apply to ASU, they should expect to receive an email from Admissions Services detailing how to activate their MyASU student account. All students are admitted into the non-thesis program, and will have an opportunity if admitted, to switch to the thesis program. HOW CAN I CHECK TO SEE IF I HAVE SUBMITTED A COMPLETE APPLICATION? On the applicant’s MyASU student account, when all Priority Task items are complete, an applicant’s application is typically complete and should show, “In Review.” It is important that applicants check their MyASU student account frequently to keep track of their application status. HOW ARE APPLICATIONS REVIEWED AND WHO REVIEWS THEM? Completed applications are reviewed in a holistic manner by a graduate admissions committee. Only complete applications are reviewed. WILL MY APPLICATION BE REVIEWED AS SOON AS IT IS COMPLETE, OR AFTER THE PRIORITY DEADLINE? Page 2 of 9 Typically, the review process does not begin until the application package is complete and it is after the priority deadline. HOW LONG DOES THE PROCESS TO REVIEW APPLICATIONS TAKE? All complete applications received by the priority deadline typically have decisions made by the March/April timeframe for fall applications, and October for spring applications. HOW WILL I KNOW WHEN AN ADMISSION DECISION HAS BEEN MADE? An applicant will be notified by email when an application decision has been made. The most up-to-date status of an applicant’s application can also be found on the student’s MyASU student account. WHAT IF I APPLY TO THE WRONG PROGRAM? An applicant must submit a complete application to the correct program. WHERE DO I MAIL MY APPLICATION MATERIALS TO? Please keep in mind that the resume and personal statement are uploaded at the time of application. The online application will ask you for three names and three email addresses for three recommenders; and the company/school for which they work. Your recommenders will receive an email and must submit their letter of recommendation electronically. The GRE and TOEFL (International applicants) are sent directly from the testing service. ASU’s school code is 4007; and for the department code, applicants may enter 0000. The officieal transcript should be sent directly from the student’s institution. Therefore, the only documents that must be sent by mail are foreign and domestic transcripts, which are officially sealed. If possible, an applicant’s 10-digit ASU Affiliate ID number or their 6-digit application ID should be on the envelope in which transcripts are sent. Transcripts will not be accepted electronically. CAN I GET MY ASU ADMISSIONS SERVICES ONLINE APPLICATION FEE BACK? Unfortunately, the Graduate Admission Services application fee is non-refundable and nontransferable. Letters of Recommendation MAY MY RECOMMENDERS SEND A SEPARATE LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION? No, all recommenders must use the online letter of recommendation which is in place through the graduate Admissions Services online application. MY RECOMMENDERS HAVE NOT RECEIVED THE EMAIL TO SUBMIT THEIR LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION. WHAT DO I DO? An applicant may log into their MyASU student account to request for his/her letters of recommendation to be re-sent. Please be aware that the system has an automatic waiting period (typically 5 to 7 business days) before a second request may be sent. MY RECOMMENDER HAS A PRE-WRITTEN LETTER; MAY I MAIL THAT TO YOU? The recommender will have an option to upload a pre-written letter at the time they do the online letter of recommendation. MAY I HAVE MORE THAN THREE RECOMMENDERS? No, the required number is three recommenders. MY RECOMMENDERS DO NOT SPEAK ENGLISH; MAY THEY STILL SUBMIT LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION? Page 4 of 9 All letters of recommendation must be in English. HOW MANY LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION ARE REQUIRED? Three letters of recommendation are required. WHAT IF MY RECOMMENDERS DO NOT RECEIVE THE EMAIL TO DO A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION? An applicant may log into their MyASU student account and see who has completed their letter of recommendation. Once letters of recommendation have been received, it will be removed from the Priority Tasks section in the applicant’s MyASU student account. Applicants may resend the letter of recommendation request to their recommenders by logging into their MyASU student account, and requesting another notification be sent through the Manage Recommenders link. Please be aware that the system has an automatic waiting period (typically 5 to 7 business days) before a second request may be sent. The recommender may also want to check his/her SPAM email. I TRIED TO REQUEST ANOTHER RECOMMENDATION TO BE SENT TO MY RECOMMENDER AND THE SYSTEM WILL NOT LET ME. WHAT DO I DO? The system will only allow an applicant to send a request in a given time frame to allow ample time for the recommender to receive and complete the request. An applicant will need to be patient and wait for the system to allow him/her to send another request (typically 5 to 7 business days). WILL YOU TAKE A PAPER COPY OF THE LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION? In order to have a consistent baseline for evaluation, we will not accept paper copies of the letters of recommendation. MY RECOMMENDER DOES NOT HAVE ACCESS TO EMAIL OR A VALID EMAIL ADDRESS. WHAT DO I DO? An applicant will need to select recommenders that have a valid email address and that have internet access. I HAVE ALREADY SUBMITTED MY APPLICATION, AND I WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE ONE OF MY RECOMMENDERS. HOW CAN I DO THIS? An applicant can manage his/her recommenders through their MyASU student account; the Manage Recommendations link. International applicants must provide both an official transcript in the original language and an official English translation in sealed envelopes. Another option for international applicants would be for the international applicant or a friend or a relative to bring these transcripts to graduate Admission Services in person to see if they would be considered official and could be used. Graduate Admission Services will only make this determination if the applicant has submitted an application to graduate Admission Services, and has paid the Graduate Admission Services application fee. MY GPA IS LOWER THAN A 3.0. DOES THAT AUTOMATICALLY DISQUALIFY ME FROM ADMISSION? No, while admittance is competitive, applications are reviewed in a holistic manner. WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR BECOMING A RESEARCH ASSISTANT (RA)? To become an RA, applicants must contact the faculty directly to inquire about a position; they can do this before arriving at ASU.
