Types of Measurements and Units Volume is the amount of space occupied by an object or a material. Volume is said to be a derived unit, since the volume of an object can be known from other measurements. The volumes of solids are less affected by pressure and temperature changes than are the volumes of most liquids and all gases. In order to find the volume of a solid you can calculate by using the formula: 𝑉 = 𝑙 · 𝑤 · 𝑑. Another way is to determine the volume by water displacement. For example, a student wants to calculate the volume of an irregularly shaped rock. To determine the volume, first add water to a graduated cylinder to a determined amount. Record the water level. Then, the student places the rock in the cylinder. Record the new level of water in the cylinder. The water in the cylinder will rise by an amount equivalent to the volume of the object. Subtract the final volume from the original volume. This is the volume of the rock. Since liquids take the shape of the container in which they are placed, a liquid whose can simply be poured into a graduated cylinder. The volume of liquids is only moderately affected by pressure. The volume of gases is very much influenced by temperature and pressure. Since gases expand to fill any container into which they are placed, the volume of the gas must always include an indication of the pressure and temperature under which that volume was measured. We measure liquid [and often gases] volume in liters [L], or divisions of liters. We measure solid volume in [cubic centimeters] cm3. Mass versus Weight Song. Mr. Edmonds.
