Paws for thought I often promise to change and then something distracts me such as leaves blowing or another dog or some toy or other. And keeping to my promise to behave and come when I am told or don’t chew things is difficult. Recently Dead Maggie Todd, Mark Breslin, James Clark Anniversary Daniel MacBeth Snr., Pauline Airlie, Elizabeth Channing, Charlie Doran Messgae from Fr Ivan Sorry no Paws for thought this week as I thought I should put a little of our state of the parish address in writing. Arnie will be back soon. As stated last week I am happy with how our parish is going forward in many ways and our pastoral planning team is working hard to develop our community. On a financial side our finances are ok but not great (see the summary over the page) and we expect them to get much worse with having to spend of the order of £25000 just to fix the roof leaks over the next couple of months alone. We have very little cash set aside to cover big expenses and there are a number of large expenses on the horizon. Thus in consultation with the pastoral planning team I am suggesting 3 things to hopefully get our parish finances in a better state: 1. We will have a second collection each week from now until the end of the year when there is no other second collections to build up a building fund. 2. I ask that everyone looks at what they give in our regular first collection what is called our ordinary income and if it has not been increased in some time please consider increasing it. Presently we average about £1.35 per person per week coming to mass (including pensioners and children). I know many people already give more than this and noone should have to be put off coming to mass for financial reasons but if we can increase our average to £2 per person/week (less than cost of a pint of beer) that should help greatly. So could everyone please consider what they give £2 per person/week would mean the Sunday collection figure we publish each week would be about £1500. 3. Please if you attend regularly and are a taxpayer join the Gift aid Scheme. This scheme was worth £6000+ to the parish last year and more than £7000 the year before. For some simple paperwork - you only have to fill in one short form and use the envelopes (or give by direct debit) we can claim back the tax on what you are already giving, it doesn’t cost anything more. Thanks again for all your help and support to our parish community here and myself since I arrived. Please continue to pray for and support the parish and myself. I am thoroughly enjoying my ministry here. God Bless. Fr Ivan FIRST READING: PSALM RESPONSE: SECOND READING: Leviticus 13:1-2.44-46 You are my refuge, O Lord: You fill me with the joy of salvation. God Bless. However newness of teaching is not always a factor of time. For example - I know how to wait or come when called - but somehow , especially when I am distracted its hard to remember (something that annoys daddy) but I’ll keep trying (and probably being trying). I guess it’s the same with this new teaching of Jesus - it always has to be something new in our hearts, particularly when we are distracted. Of course sometimes time affects me too - usually when its walk time or daddy says he is busy and does not have enough time to play. But taking a break this week made me realise that often we are too tied to notion of times, too attached to when exactly a little hand on a clock reaches a particular spot, & not rejoicing enough in the beauty and wonder of God’s creation around us - especially when daddy is pulling me away from chasing that wonder. Sincere thanks from Mary’s Meals fundraising group for all the donations received over last few weeks, your generosity has been overwhelming and takes us nearer our target of £7000 e.g. Phoenix Club, St Bride’s, Red Deer Centre and various anonymous donors Pastoral Planning Meeting .Will be held on Monday 9th January at 7.00 pm in the house. All are invited The purpose of this is to help us decide where our parish priorities lie for 2012 and beyond. At he last meeting we discussed pastoral and spiritual things in general and I asked people to go away and pray about them. Alongside this we will also start to look at the finance of the parish as we have a large amount of work needed on the roof which is leaking in quite a few places. I will give the whole parish a summary of this and the costs involved once we finish the parish accounts for 2012 later this month and get in all the quotes for the roof. At the moment we are estimating it will cost £25,000 and since this is more than we presently have in the bank we will need to look at how we fund this. But I am not sure I could manage it – too many things would distract me by moving or doing different things and having neither seen any sheep or goats I wouldn’t know how to tell them apart. So how then does God tell us apart, what can he see in me that tells him I’m his. And what thing or activity do I go off chasing now that takes me away from Him. Theme for 2011 “Belief in Dialogue” This provides an opportunity of contacting and engaging with those of other faiths in the community.
