Summary – campaign overview 1.1 Introduction There has be a wealth of research that has been conducted over the last couple of years across the North East that shows that there is ever greater demands being places on the healthcare system and the confusion that exists in patients trying to navigate the system appropriately. Through research, there is evidence that we need to inform and educate people about urgent care and the services that are available and to use information to change people’s perception about the services they should use. To try and address these issues, Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) across Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Durham, Darlington and Teesside are working together on a winter campaign called ‘keep calm’. ‘Keep calm’ focuses on self-care and the main winter respiratory illnesses that can be looked after at home or with advice from a pharmacist, with the main message focusing on ‘keep calm and look after yourself’. 1.2 Campaign objectives To provide clear information to the public around the best use of local NHS services this winter – specifically for self-care, community pharmacy and antibiotics use To support surge management for the local NHS in winter planning 2. The campaign The campaign starts on 17 November 2014 coinciding with the national self-care week and European Antibiotics Awareness Day (which takes place on 18 November) and regional activity timetable can be found in appendix one. The campaign targets normally healthy people with an emphasis on parents of young children, older people and people who get free prescriptions. 2.1 Key campaign weeks Throughout the campaign, there are specific weeks that we will be focusing on, these include: w/c 17 November – launch of keep calm w/c 24 November – keep calm and ask your pharmacist w/c 1 December – keep calm and antibiotics aren’t always the answer w/c 8 December – get repeat prescriptions w/c 15 December – get repeat prescriptions and have a well-stocked medicine cabinet w/c 22 December – keep calm and call 111 this Christmas Page 3 of 18 2.2 Key messages Primary Secondary Call to action 3. Campaign PR and digital launch Working with Metro Radio/TFM Metro Radio/TFM have been approached as a partner to help launch the winter campaign. Steve and Karen, breakfast presenters for Metro Radio, will introduce a short video asking people on the street a series of questions about how to look after yourself during winter. Synchronised tweet/Thunderclap The campaign will launch on 17 November at 10am. We will circulate a link and ask that all partners who have Twitter accounts follow the simple instructions to synchronise the launch Tweet and enable us to reach the maximum amount of people. See section 5.1 about how you can get involved and help. 5.1 How you can help – Launch tweet The campaign will launch on 17 November at 10am, partners with Twitter accounts encouraged to join in with a synchronised tweet. An online tool we are using requires 50 partners to sign up, it will then automatically post from their Twitter accounts at 10am on launch day. Thunderclap We will send out information about how to join separately. Page 5 of 18 6. Additional resources 6.1 Press release – launch Winter campaign launches with clear message from the region’s NHS – ‘Keep calm and look after yourself’ to combat those common winter illnesses The NHS in the region is joining forces once again this year and urging North Easterners to ‘Keep calm and look after yourself’ to combat the usual winter coughs, colds, aches and illnesses that are common in usually healthy people at this time of the year. Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) across the North East launch their annual winter campaign on Monday 17 November and are reminding people that many of the common winter ailments and illnesses people come down with at this time of year are easily treated at home or with advice from a pharmacist – with no need to see a doctor or nurse and keeping valuable appointments open for those who really need them. Backed by partner NHS organisations in the region, the campaign will run throughout the Christmas holiday period, traditionally the busiest time of the year for the NHS and targets people who are usually in good health and perhaps wake up one morning feeling under the weather and don’t know what to do. INSERT SPOKESPERSON said that during the winter months, the demand for NHS services increases significantly, so it’s crucial that services are available for those most in need and those who can, self-care or visit their local pharmacist. INSERT SPOKESPERSON said: “Winter weather means more slips and trips – and generally more of us feeling unwell as we spend more time indoors and coughs, colds and other viruses are passed around our family, friends and colleagues at work. “This all adds up to more of us having an accident or becoming unwell with a winter bug, meaning more people want to see their GP, attend accident and emergency or call 999. INSERT SPOKESPERSON continued: “However, there is no need to panic as most normally healthy people with a winter illness do not need to see their GP, attend A&E and absolutely do not need to call 999 – so our message this winter is ‘keep calm’. “Colds, sore throats, head-aches, hangovers, upset stomachs, coughs, aches, pains, and winter vomiting should all be treated at home or with the advice of your local pharmacist, with pain killers, rest and plenty of fluids. “By doing this not only are you helping to reduce the spread of winter viruses to other vulnerable patients in NHS waiting rooms – you are also keeping appointments available for people who have serious health conditions that must see a doctor or nurse.” Page 6 of 18 The Keep Calm campaign launched today to tie in with National Self Care Week and European Antibiotics Awareness Day, and includes a dedicated website with information on common winter illnesses, what the symptoms are, how to treat them, how long they will last. It includes advice on what to keep in your winter medicines cabinet so you can be ready to treat illnesses as they start. Visit keepcalmthiswinter.org.uk for further information. You can also follow the campaign on Twitter @keepcalmne The campaign will be seen on regional TV adverts, buses, social media and printed materials in GP practices, pharmacies and other venues across the region. The campaign message of ‘Keep Calm and look after yourself’ runs across three threads including: Keep Calm and ask a pharmacist Keep Calm and call 111 Keep Calm and antibiotics aren’t always the answer. ENDS 6.2 Web text and content Keep calm and be ready for winter During the winter months, the demand for NHS services increases significantly as cold weather means there are more slips, trips and injuries. Generally more of us feel unwell during the winter as we spend more time indoors and coughs and colds are passed around our family, friends and colleagues at work. This all adds up to more of us having an accident or becoming unwell with a winter bug, meaning more people want to see their GP, attend accident and emergency or call 999. ‘Keep calm and look after yourself’ is the strong message from INSERT LOCAL AREA NHS this winter, to remind people that many of the common winter ailments and illnesses are easily treated at home, or with advice from a pharmacist – with no need to see a doctor or nurse. The ‘Keep Calm’ campaign which gives advice on how to treat a range of common winter conditions by keeping a well-stocked medicine cabinet at home or speaking to your local pharmacist. INSERT SPOKESPERSON said there is no need to panic when feeling under the weather. “Most normally healthy people with a winter illness do not need to see their GP, attend A&E and absolutely do not need to call 999 – so our message this winter is ‘keep calm’. “Colds, sore throats, head-aches, hangovers, upset stomachs, coughs, aches, pains, and winter vomiting should all be treated at home or with the advice of your local pharmacist, with pain killers, rest and plenty of fluids. Page 7 of 18 By doing this not only are you helping to reduce the spread of winter viruses to other vulnerable patients in NHS waiting rooms – you are also keeping appointments available for people who have serious health conditions that must see a doctor or nurse.” The campaign message of ‘keep calm and look after yourself’ runs across themes including: Keep calm and ask a pharmacist Keep calm and call 111 Keep calm and antibiotics aren’t always the answer For more information, please visit keepcalmthiswinter.org.uk or follow @keepcalmne What should I keep in my medicine cabinet at home? Medicine or first aid Paracetamol and ibuprofen Oral rehydration salts (such as Dioralyte®) Antacids (comes in chewable tablets, or tablets that dissolve in water, or in liquid form) First aid kit: Bandages Plasters Thermometer Antiseptic Eyewash solution Sterile dressings Medical tape Tweezers What it’s used for Effective at relieving most minor aches and pains such as headaches period pain, inflammation in arthritis and sprains. Fever, diarrhoea and vomiting make us lose water and essential minerals, and can lead to dehydration. If you have these symptoms and can't continue your normal diet, oral rehydration salts can help to restore your body’s natural balance of minerals and fluid and relieve discomfort and tiredness. They don’t fight the underlying cause of your illness, such as a virus or bacteria. We normally over indulge during the festive period and this can bring stomach ache, heartburn or trapped wind. A simple antacid will reduce stomach acidity and bring relief. These are some of the main items that should be in your first aid kit. If you have small children – you should keep a thermometer and children’s paracetamol handy, and take with you if you take trips or breaks away. Make sure you have repeat prescriptions If you or someone you care for requires medicines regularly, make sure you order and collect repeat prescriptions in good time to ensure you or your family have enough medicine to last over the festive period. Many of the calls to out of hour’s health services are for emergency repeat prescriptions when people have run out of their medication – a situation that could be avoided with some forethought and planning. By thinking ahead for your regular medication you are helping our busy out of hour’s doctors and nurses. Page 8 of 18 Information on your local NHS services If you are injured or unwell there are a number of different NHS services that you can access. If you are unsure if a service can treat your condition, just call ahead and ask. Pharmacist Your local pharmacy provides expert advice on common health problems and many pharmacies have early and late opening hours. GP practices and out of hours GP services Your GP practice treats the majority of your healthcare needs and is usually the first point of contact for most medical issues. Everyone should be registered with a GP practice - if you are not registered, you can find information about local GP practices at www.nhs.uk. GP practices are usually open Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays). Many now open extended hours – sometimes earlier in the morning, later in the evening and some are open on a Saturday. During the Christmas holidays GP practices will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, so please make sure you order any repeat medication in advance. Please check with your practice for opening details. If you need to see a GP when your own practice is closed, contact the 111 service who can help. Urgent dental treatment and out of hours access You can contact the out of hours dental service through the 111 service. A&E or 999 – for health emergencies Please ONLY use the 999 service for serious health emergencies which include: a major accident, broken bones, breathing problems, severe chest pains, unconsciousness, suspected stroke and severe blood loss.
