Describe heredity as the passage of instructions from one generation
Competency
to another and recognize that heredity information is contained in
3d – DOK 2
genes, located in the chromosomes of each cell.
8th Grade –
I can explain the meaning of symbols on a pedigree.

Type of electricity produced by a power plant = alternating current
A device that increases the voltage of electricity = step up transformer
Location of a step up transformer = transmission substation
Carries high voltage electricity over long distances = high-voltage transmission lines
Carries lower voltage electricity through a town = distribution network
Number of oxygen molecules required to balance the equation below = 3
2CH4O + ?O2 → 2CO2 + 4H2O
Key Points on Pedigrees
1. A pedigree is a family tree that gives the phenotypes of individuals for a particular trait.
2. The purpose of a pedigree is to show how a trait is inherited over many generations.
3. Pedigrees have standard symbols representing the parts which are usually provided in
a key.
a. Females are always shown with circles and males with squares.
b. Marriage between two individuals is shown using a horizontal line.
c. Children are connected to the parents with a vertical line.
4. Individuals showing the trait in their phenotype are shaded, individuals without the trait
are not shaded.
5. Sometimes heterozygous carriers for a recessive allele will be shown as half shaded.
6. Generations are sometimes labeled using Roman Numerals on the left side of the
pedigree to make it easier to refer to a specific level in the pedigree.
7. Individual organisms within a generation are labeled with normal numbers.
a. The numbers we use every day are called Arabic numbers.
Pedigrees: Guided Practice
The pedigree to the left shows the inheritance
of a genetic disease called celiac.
1. Number of total males: 5
2. Number of total females: 4
3. Number of females with celiac: 2
4. Number of males with celiac: 1
5. Number of males in the third generation
with celiac: 0

6. You are a genetic counselor trying to
determine the inheritance of a disease in
a family. You take the following notes
while interviewing the family. Use these
notes to produce a pedigree in the space
to the right.
A couple has four children, three girls and
one boy. The father has the disease. One
of his daughters and his son also have the
disease. The daughter marries a man
without the disease and they have a
daughter and son that do not have the
disease.
Pedigrees: Independent Practice
The pedigree below shows the inheritance of a genetic disease, hemophilia.
1. How many males are in the pedigree?
2. How many males are affected by Hemophilia?
3. How many females are affected by Hemophilia?
4. How many females are normal (not affected)?
5. How are marriages indicated in the pedigree?
6. How many children did the first couple have?
7. How many marriages are in this pedigree?
8. How many couples on had one child?
Draw the pedigree described in the paragraph below to show the inheritance of sickle cell
anemia.
A woman whose father had sickle cell
anemia and whose mother did not marries a
man who is a carrier for sickle cell. The man’s
mother had sickle cell and his father did not.
They have a son who has sickle cell anemia.
Draw a pedigree showing all four
grandparents, the two parents, and the son.
9. Shooting for ADVANCED: What was the
genotype of the son’s mom?
