It is also a remedy for removing worms. The homemade remedy is: epasote (an herb that is used in Mexican and Central American cooking, frequently added to beans, particularly black beans) with garlic. This has to be given before you eat breakfast. First you put the kettle on with garlic and the epasote. Let it boil (after it starts to make bubbles) 5 minutes. When it cools, put it in a glass with a straw. The person who is going to drink the mixture should not smell it; he or she should cover his or her nose and drink it quickly without breathing. Dayleen Robert Country of Origin: Micronesia One of our own medicines we use is Guava. And it really helps a lot. If you have really bad diarrhea, you chew the very young leaves that are just barely growing. You eat it one or two times, or until it goes away! Another remedy uses the Hibiscus Tilliaceus. When a person has a swollen skin bruise, the leaf buds are crushed, wrapped in a piece of cloth, and put it in a container half-filled with water. The person then gently massages the swollen bruise with the wrapped medicine. It is kept wet and used over and over until the bruise is no longer swollen. In our own culture, the leaf buds of the hibiscus also used for some superstitious beliefs in Pohnpei, Micronesia. For instance, if a group of people are going to do a cultural display before a large crowd filled with strangers, they usually take a shower with water that contains crushed leaf buds before the sun rises on the day of the display. It is believed that the shower helps take away nervousness, and any other feelings that may interrupt one's concentration. Jose Tista Country of Origin: Guatemala This is the cure that my Aunt Carlota used for her headaches. First you would need one lemon and one bandana or handkerchief. Cut one lemon into two small slices. Put the lemon slices on each side of the temple area of the side of your head. Using the help of someone else, wrap the bandana around the head making sure the lemon slices do not slip out. Make sure that the bandana is not too tight. My Aunt says that this procedure helps her when the headaches are too severe. When the water has boiled, add about two teaspoons full of Vic’s Vapor Rub and turn off the heat. Set the pot on the counter. Get a towel and cover your head around the pot and breathe in the steam from pot deeply until there is no more steam. Do this at night, or if you do it during the day, cover yourself with a sweater. Also, rub your feet with Vic’s and wear socks. Do not walk without shoes. Martha Jimenez Country of Origin: Mexico In my state, called Morelia Michoacán, we use tea as a home remedy. If we are sick we go to "el mercado" (the shopping center) and look for leaves to make tea. Mint, lemon, and chamomile are the most common. When I was little, my mom gave us tea every morning. I remember the cold days with a cup of tea in my hands. Sometimes, my mom put Vic’s Vapor Rub on the cup because we had the flu or a cough. I still do, especially if my kids are sick. I love tea because that reminds me of my mom. This is my favorite home remedy. Edith Ortiz Country of Origin: Mexico For bronchitis, anoint Vic’s on the chest and in the back. Also, put a little piece of newspaper on both sides for the night. Take care the next day that he or she does not get a lot of air which causes stomach pain. Boil in a cup of water three or four mint blades then add a half of a lemon’s juice, a pinch of bicarbonate, and then drink it.
