In a tight team race, Matoaca clinched the title with all three of their finalists winning their Championship match. Only 15 schools have been crowned AAA/5A/6A team champion in the 67 years since wrestling began in Virginia (1949). State Championships were won by 11 number-one seeds, with two won by number-two seeds and one by a number-three seed. Two number-one seeds squared off in six of the finals. As usual, seniors dominated the 2015 5A State Championships, 26* placed in the top four. Of the 29 underclassmen who placed (17 juniors, 10 sophomores and 2 freshmen), 5 were State Champions and will try again next season. (*One senior was DQ’s, stats adjusted) There were four returning State Champions in the tournament, two of them repeated: Neal Richards/145 and Anthony Helm/285 - both from Matoaca. Odd stat: according to trackwrestling there were 31 pins in 6A in a combined time of 113:28 (minutes/seconds), while in 5A there were 21 pins in 69:57. Average season record of all 5A State Champs: 41-3. THE CHAMPIONS 106 – Brandon Woody, Sophomore, Matoaca, is his school and Coach Michael Moore’s 7th State Champion (9 Individual Championships). Coach Moore was an NCAA Division 1 All-American at Lock Haven (1978/5th/142). Coach Moore’s first State Champ was Petersburg’s Kevin Turner (1985/155), current Athletic Director at Stonewall Jackson HS in Manassas. Brandon placed 4th in the Region and 5th at States last year. He is a 2X Conference 12 Champion and is on the student honor roll. Brandon’s older brother Bryson (138/junior) is also on the team. 113 – Anthony Monahan, Senior, Gloucester, claimed the 5th State Championship for his school (5 Individual Championships). Gloucester’s last State Champion was Greg Todd (2007/140). Page 7 of 10 2015 5A State Wresting Championships 120 – Stryder Jackson, Junior, Great Bridge, became the 50th State Champion in the storied history of the Great Bridge program (82 Individual Championships). Stryder is Coach Matt Small’s 2nd State Champion at Great Bridge. Coach Small, a Great Bridge (GB) alumnus, previously coached two State Champs at Grassfield HS (2009) and eight at Cox HS (five in 2010, and three in 2011), for a total of 11 State Champions with 12 Championships. Stryder’s Championship is the 6th for his family. Stryder and his dad Jon are the first father/son combination to win State Championships for GB. His father Jon won two titles for GB (1986 & 1987, both at 112). His uncle Jody Jackson was a 3X State Champion for GB (1986/105, 1987/126, 1988/132). All of those titles were under Coach Wayne Martin. Stryder will be back next year to try for another Jackson family title. A whole page could be written about the GB champion families. The runner-up at 132 Jacob Curling’s dad Billy was also a State Champ for GB (1987/138). Stryder’s main hobby is the game of Cornhole, which he is very good at. In the classroom, he maintains a 3.77 GPA. He has made no commitment yet for college but has expressed interest in Virginia Tech. 126 – Connor Wallace, Junior, Hickory, became his school (opened in 1996) and Coach Ben Summerlin’s first State Champion. Coach Summerlin has been at Hickory for nine years, the last five as head coach. Connor placed 4th last year at 120 at States. This season Connor was 1st at the Ocean Lakes Invitational Tournament, 3rd at the Colt Classic/Christians Brother Academy, 1st at the PenSouth Conference 10, and 1st at the South Region Tournament. 132 – Anthony (Tony) Amendolare, Junior, Hickory, is his school’s and Coach Ben Summerlin’s second State Champion. Anthony placed 5th last year at 132 at States. He placed 3rd at the Ocean Lakes Invitational, 4th at the Colt Classic/Christians Brothers Academy, 1st at the PenSouth Conference 10, and 2nd at the South Region. 138 – Bill Adusei-Poku, Junior, Mount Vernon, claimed the 5th Individual State Championship for his school and second for Coach Anthony McDuffie. Coach McDuffie had a previous State Champ while coaching Woodbridge (Ivan Lagares, 2004/171). Bill was state runner-up last year in a last second OT loss to Matoaca’s Kyle Gordon. He is a 3X District/Conference and Region Champion. Completing this season as an undefeated State Champion, Bill was never taken down or scored against except for escapes. In his first high school year he was the team MVP on the freshman football team (on both offence and defense). Bill also participates in his church’s activities. He will go for a third state title next year at the 6A level as Mount Vernon moves up in class. 145 – Trevor Watkins, Senior, Mountain View, Trevor is his school and Coach Franklin DeBerry’s third State Champion. Coach DeBerry coached another State Champion at North Stafford (Justin Tribble 2011/215, currently wrestling at Division II Limestone College). Trevor placed 3rd at 138 last year, and placed 4th at the 2015 Escape the Rock, a tough tournament in Pennsylvania. He has a lofty 4.4 GPA in the IB Program at Mountain View. Trevor is undecided on a college but several have expressed much interest. Page 8 of 10 2015 5A State Wresting Championships 152 – Neal Richards, Senior, Matoaca, won the 10th Individual State Championship for his school and long-time Coach Michael Moore. Neal finished his outstanding high school wrestling career by joining a very elite club by becoming only the 11th Four-time Virginia AAA/6A/5A State Champion (since wrestling began in Virginia in 1949), and only the second Central Region wrestler to join that group, after Cody Allala of Hopewell. He is Matoaca’s first 4X State, 4X District/Conference and 4X Regional Champion. He placed twice at the prestigious Beast of the East (8th/2013, 4th/2014). He will contend in April to become Matoaca’s second 4X NHSCA National Champion, following Blake Roulo, a Matoaca 2011 graduate who is currently wrestling at George Mason. Neal is ranked 10th in the country in the most recent INTERMAT rankings. He is an honor roll student, and an active member of the school band. Neal is undecided on a college, but hopes to study Civil Engineering and wrestle in college. 160 – Michael Battista, Sophomore, Broad Run, became his school’s 2nd AAA/5A State Champion and Coach James Totaro’s first State Champion. Broad Run’s only previous AAA Class State Champion was Brandon Calderwood (1999/125). Coach Totaro has been the Broad Run head coach for five years. Broad Run moved to AAA Class in the late 1990’s and back to AA Class and has had 4 State Champions in AA Class. Michael played freshman football but has been devoted to wrestling since then. He loves to lift weights and trains all year. 170 – Thomas Parsons, Sophomore, Massaponax, became his school’s 2nd State Champion. Their first Champion was Josh Wine (2007/285). Thomas is Coach Douglas Milburn’s first State Champion. Coach Milburn, in his 4th year of coaching at Massaponax, is a transplant from Connecticut, where he was a 3X State Champion in his high school days. In this season’s Conference 15 tournament Thomas injury defaulted before the final, came back a week later to win the 5A North Championship, and this week topped off his season with the State Title. He placed 7th at the 2014 5A States. He also was a semi-finalist and finished 5th at the MAWA Eastern Nationals in 2014. He was a varsity member of the school football team as a freshman in the 20132014 season. Thomas is also a member of the Theatre and Forensics team at Massaponax and is a 2014-2015 5A North Region Champion of Theatre. Looking to college in two years, he plans to major in Theatre Arts at a major University and wants to become a high school Theatre teacher and wrestling coach. 182 – Tyrone Gayle, Junior, Salem-Virginia Beach, became his school’s 3rd State Champion and Coach Robert Toran’s first Champion at the school. He also coached Norview’s last State Champion (Adrin Taylor, 2010/160). Salem’s two previous State Championships were won in the same year: Chip Reyes/1994/103 and Jun Blancaflor/1994/112. Tyrone was Conference 9 Champion, and was 3rd at the 5A South Region, in addition to being the only number-3 seed to win a 5A State Championship. During this season he was the Champion at the Ram Cup, the Churchland Invitational and the Manchester Invitational. After trying for a second title next season, Tyrone plans to wrestle in college and pursue a major in Criminal Justice. Page 9 of 10 2015 5A State Wresting Championships 195 – Charles Belvin, Senior, Atlee, won the 3rd State Championship in school history (3 Championships), and Coach Eric Monger’s first at Atlee. The school’s last State Champion was Donnie Ooton (2001/125). 220 – Justice Williams, Senior, Mills Godwin, became his school and Coach Chris Harris’s first State Champion. He is a past Virginia Freestyle State Champ. He was one win away from placing top 8 at Fargo in both Freestyle and Greco two years ago. His freshman season was cut short with a torn meniscus. Chris is a 2X Conference 11 Champion, 1X Region Champ and was 5th at States last year. In the fall, Justice is looking to either play football at Virginia State or wrestle and play football at NCAA Division III Ferrum College for Coach Nate Yetzer. 285 – Anthony Helm, Junior, Matoaca, won his school and Coach Michael Moore’s 11th Individual State Championship. Anthony repeated his 5A State Championship of last year. He is a 3X District, Conference and Region Champion, and was State runnerup as a freshman. Anthony is already being scouted by many D1 schools for football. At 6’2” and 300 pounds (during football season), he is a force on the defensive line. He hopes to major in engineering in college, but is saving a choice of school until his senior year. NEXT SEASON Returners next season by region: the South Region returns 15 placers next year, while the North Region returns 14. The following schools have two or more placers returning (with returning points from this tournament): 3 each – Broad Run (38), and Kellam (29) 2 each – Freedom-LC (23), Great Bridge (38), Gloucester (12), Hickory (38), Kempsville (23), Marshall (12), and Matoaca (43) Page 10 of 10
