Pre-Algebra with Support Grading Procedures Mrs. Grabner 2014-2015 School Year Each quarter, you will be assigned a letter grade for the class. The letter grade corresponds to a percent score that is found by dividing the number of points you have earned by the number of total points for the quarter. In the beginning of each quarter, assignments are “worth” more until we get more grades into the grade book. For example, if you earn a 3 out of 5 on the first assignment, your initial percent score is a 60%, but as we go through the quarter, the total points will increase, and that initial 3 out of 5 will not play as large a role in your overall score. Please keep this in mind with the first few grades of any given quarter in the year. Your percent grade and letter grade for each quarter will come from this list of potential assignments (not all assignments will be present in a given quarter and there could be other assignments that will be included that are not mentioned here): Mental Math Mental Math quizzes will value between 10 and 15 points for each quiz. There will be between 6 and 8 quizzes per quarter. Topics include integers, order of operations, common fractions/decimals/percents, and parts of a number. Problem of the Week (POW) Each quarter, you will receive anywhere from 6-9 weekly problems that will be assigned to you on Monday and will be due on Friday. These are worth 10 points each. I do NOT accept late POW’s. The only exception to this is an excused absence (prior approved trip or illness). If you know you will be out, please hand in your POW before you leave! Tests/Quizzes/Graded Progress Checks During each quarter, we will have various tests or quizzes or even graded warm-ups or progress checks. These vary in number of points each and in the number of graded assignments based on the units covered each quarter. Tests will be announced approximately one week in advance and quizzes can be announced 2 or more days in advance. Please make sure you prepare for these, as this is where the majority of your points will come from each quarter. Team Challenges (in class) Team challenges or group assignments will take place in class. Your teacher will collect these and will grade them according to effort, willingness to try new strategies, and correctness. The number and value of points will vary during each quarter. Clickers After lessons are taught in class, be prepared that some clicker questions we complete as a class can be individually graded. If you have paid attention, asked questions, and completed your homework assignments, these should be no problem! Clicker points will vary during the quarters. In your student handbook, Section V discusses grading at the junior high level. Here is a chart to help you identify your percent scores correlated to a letter grade. Percent Range 93-100 90=92 87-89 83-86 80-82 77-79 73-76 70-72 67-69 63-66 60-62 0-59 Letter Grade A AB+ B BC+ C CD+ D DF Additionally, you will take an end of course assessment that will calculate as part of your final grade. The final grade will be calculated by averaging the four quarterly grades, each counting as 25% of the final grade. A final exam will be held in a separate session, but will count as one test score in the fourth marking period. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!
