Mapping the Coordinate Plane
Coordinate planes, like maps, are used to find the exact location of a place of interest.
We use ordered pairs, (x, y), to determine where on the coordinate plane each point is
located. Follow the directions below to plot different Social Studies concepts and locate
them on the coordinate plane.
1. Label all four quadrants of the coordinate plane.
2. Label the x-axis and y- axis.
3. Plot and label the following Tribes on the map:
Inuit (6, 7)
Lakota (0, -1)
Kwakiutl (-9, 5)
Pueblo (-8, 0)
Iroquois (11½ , 1)
4. List the quadrant that each Tribe falls in or the axis that it falls on:
Inuit
____________
Kwakiutl ___________
Lakota ____________
Iroquois ____________
Pueblo ____________
5. The following states are plotted on the map. Please give the ordered pair for each.
G: Georgia _______________
M: Massachusetts
P: Pennsylvania ___________
T: Texas___________________________
I: Idaho __________________
R: New Mexico _____________________
N: Nebraska
V: Jamestown, VA ___________________
6. List the states from problem 5 that fall into each of the quadrants. If a state falls in more
than one quadrant than write it under both quadrants. (For example, California would be
written under Quadrant II and Quadrant III.)
Quadrant I
Quadrant II
Quadrant III
Quadrant IV
7. Name the bodies of water and their ordered pairs for the 3 bodies of water labeled on the
map by the following letters:
A:
B:
C:
