Dr Ryan Lavelle, BA (Hons) MA PhD FRHistS Senior Lecturer in History University of Winchester Dr Ryan Lavelle gained his first degree at Royal Holloway, University of London, and an MA in Medieval Studies at the University of York. He studied for a PhD at the University of Winchester, which he was awarded in 2002. Currently, Ryan is a Senior Lecturer in Medieval History at the University of Winchester, specialising in Anglo-Saxon and early medieval military and political history and is the author of a range of books and articles relating to the Middle Ages. His most recent book, Alfred's Wars: Sources and Interpretations of Anglo-Saxon Warfare in the Viking Age was selected for the 2011 Outstanding Academic Title list by Choice magazine and the 2012 Verbruggen Prize, awarded by De Re Militari: The Society for Medieval Military History. Ryan’s interests include Anglo-Saxon England; royal landholding in Anglo-Saxon Wessex; the politics of the Late Anglo-Saxon kingdom; the Normans and the Norman Conquest; the Carolingian Renaissance; and early medieval warfare.
