2015 Freshers’ Handbook Dear class of 2015… Welcome to King’s, which is undeniably the best Cambridge College. Only at King’s do we combine the magnificence of Cambridge University - the world-famous Chapel and choir, the spectacular dining hall, the sprawling lawns and gardens - with a restless revolutionary spirit. At first you’ll notice the small acts of our resistance: no gowns or high tables at formal hall, the prominent communist flag in the bar, and the campaign stickers in the bathrooms. But soon, you'll find yourself drawn deeper into the vibrant and tenacious college community. That community is embodied by KCSU, which provides King's students with a much-needed collective voice in college. Together we've achieved some great things for students through the years, from the introduction of the C1 key, which lets us open doors and gates to college after hours, to the addition of a low-cost £1.60 meal to the servery menu just four months ago. This year, our priority is to oppose further rises to student living costs - including rent and food prices - as well as to secure adequate financial support for all students affected by the recent cuts. But our concerns aren't limited to the student bubble - KCSU has a longstanding reputation for its political campaigning. Back in the 80s, KCSU used to give money to miners strikes, engaged in regular protests and wrote letters to governments. Though nowadays we're a bit less radical (and no longer allowed to support organisations whose policies do not directly affect students), KCSU remains a politically-charged and very active student union. Most recently, as part of a national campaign, KCSU has fought to ensure that all King’s College staff are paid the living wage (currently set at £7.85ph), and last June we donated just over £400 to the staff hardship fund. While the living wage was paid in 2013-14, the college hasn’t committed to paying it every year - so there’s still a lot of work to be done. That said, you don't have to be at all political to enjoy King's, or even to get involved in KCSU. There is truly something for everyone here - the fact that we're a bit off-the-wall makes us an inclusive and welcoming space for all. There's a huge range of college-based societies and sports clubs you can join, whether you're drawn to our fantastic Boat Club or tempted to try stand-up comedy, drama, music, or art. King’s students have been known to rise up the ranks in the ADC, the Footlights, the Cambridge Union, the Tab, and the Fitzwilliam Museum Society, and to play for university sports teams. You'll find loads more info on the KCSU website (kcsu.org.uk), and at the King's Freshers Fair on 5 October. As for getting involved in KCSU, a recent restructuring of the exec means that there'll be staggered elections in the next few weeks, and therefore many opportunities to take up a position. Every year, several freshers are elected to the KCSU exec, so don't be put off from standing. If you’re not quite ready for the responsibility but still want to get involved, you can join one of the KCSU working groups which lobby and campaign for specific issues. Emails tagged with [KCSU Announce] in your inbox will be your rallying cries. But for now, enjoy meeting your fellow students, wander along the gorgeous King’s grounds, and sit back and enjoy the mad whirlwind that is freshers week. Eleni Courea KCSU President 2015 Part 1 - The Exec There are 16 positions on the current KCSU exec committee filled by fellow undergrads and elected by the student body to represent your views to the college and to support you in your endeavours during your time at King’s. Hi! I'm Eleni, a third-year HSPS student at King's and this year's KCSU President. I make sure that the KCSU policy which students vote for is put into practice. The more work you give me, the better – so make sure you attend open meetings! Alongside the Vice President, I represent undergraduates at College Council and Governing Body, where all the high-level decisions in King's are made. Alongside the Vice President, I vote on College policy and put papers to Council on behalf of the student body. Whatever may come up – trouble with living costs, issues with tutors, or unsatisfactory coffee shop muffins – I'm always happy to provide you with representation or support. You can email me at president@kcsu.org.uk, call or text 07547 818376, or pop over to Bene't Street Hostel and ring 206. Here's a tip though – I'll most likely be sitting in the King's coffee shop! Hello, I'm Gabriel. I'm a third year historian here at King's and this year I am KCSU's Vice President. My main role is to represent the interests of King's students both to the college and to CUSU (the university student's union). In essence I want to make sure our voices are heard on a range of important issues, from education policy to bar prices and everything in between. If you're interested in getting involved in any of this, or if I can help you in any other way, get in touch at vice.president@kcsu.org.uk or grab me around college. Enjoy freshers week and welcome to King's! Hey! I’m Alex, I’m a second-year historian at King’s, and this year I am acting as KCSU Chair. I help the President and VicePresident with the day-to-day running of the union, and maintain a record of policy. KCSU is committed to working fairly and democratically. Representing KCSU, I have to make sure that your voices are heard. I am someone you can approach at any time should you wish to voice your opinion, and there are plenty of ways of doing this: at the Open Meetings (held at least once a term), or, if you don’t like the idea of speaking in public, you can message me on the KCSU website or by email. KCSU is your union; you are encouraged to articulate any concerns or ideas you may have! You can always contact me at chair@kcsu.org.uk or adk41@cam.ac.uk. Hey, I’m Kaaliot, a sixth year Historical Economist and this year’s Entertainments Officer, or Ents for short. Ok, we’re really two people, Kaamil Shah and Elliot Bell, but Ents is a big job at King’s so it’s often been split between two people. One of the best things at King’s are the weekly formals and we are in charge of those as well as the events in the bar afterwards. If you ever have a problem with ticketing, formals in general, or want to be involved in these events, then please email us at ents@kcsu.org.uk. The nature of the role means that we also know a lot about room booking and catering, so we can also be contacted with regards to those things. Another important thing we do is organising Sunday Funday after exams in Easter Term, a massive day of barbecues and games and by tradition we are required to lead the charge from the bar to the club. So for laughs, a bit of college insider knowledge, or anything to do with ents, feel free to drop into Ents HQ (Bodley’s Court W7 and W8) Hey! I'm Husna Ara, I'm a second year Philosophy student, and the ethnic minorities officer here at King's. I'm involved in organising events for students of ethnic backgrounds. These include speaker's events and film screenings, as well as keeping the student body up to date with regular bulletins about local events and networks. As well as encouraging social stuff, I see my role mainly as a platform to provoke a critical understanding of systemic disadvantages faced by people of ethnic backgrounds. Other than this I'll do my best to organise some social stuff as well :) If you'd like to chat or let me know about how I could broaden the role feel free to drop me a line at ethnic.minorities@kcsu.org.uk or just say hey! Hello my adorable freshies, I’m Priya, your female welfare officer for this year! I’m a 3rd year PBS (one of the many abbreviations you’ll learn to love) student at King’s, selfproclaimed BNOC, and serial ‘procrasti-baker’, so you’ll probably see me shoving baked goods at people whilst carrying models of human brains. I’m here to ensure your first year is as smooth as possible. As welfare, I’m here to talk. Whenever you’re unsure about anything, stressed or just want to have a quick chat I’ll be there (along my glorious male welfare bffHugs). We also provide access to free sexual health supplies (safe-sex-is-good-sex) and can direct you to members of college/ counselling should you need any advice or help! Feel free to add me of facebook (Priya Das), email or just stop me whenever to talk! I’ll most probably be lurking in the bar either guzzling coffee, a G&T (after 7 of course…) or stretched out on the couch dealing with the repercussions of said G&T. Think of welfare as your overly keen, yet helpful big brother/sister! Much love and looking forward to seeing you all! xx Hey, I'm Hugo Herman-Wilson, a third year theology student and your current Male Welfare Officer. Alongside Priya (Female Welfare) I form part of your support system here at King's. That means I can be a shoulder to cry on, someone to act as a 'signpost' pointing you in the right direction for any help you need, or simply someone to show you where the condom machines are. I'm available 24/7 either in my room (U4 in Bodley's), via email (hdh26/welfare.male@kcsu.org.uk) or via text/phone (0796906334). Overall, I'm here for the more personal side of the student experience, and aim to make your time here at King's as amazing as possible - trust me, it's going to be awesome. Just wait until you taste one of Priya's cakes! Safe H Hello, my name’s Amy, a second year HSPS student and this year’s LGBT+ officer. King’s has a really welcoming LGBT+ community, and during Michaelmas there will be lots of LGBT+ related social events, both college and university based! I’ll also be around for general LGBT+ welfare help. You can email me at lgbt@kcsu.org.uk, and I’ll be around during fresher’s week for any questions you might have, as well as sending out regular emails for events! Hey! We're Ceylon and Scott, and we're the KCSU Access Officers for this year! Our job is to make sure everyone knows that University is open to them if they want it to be, regardless of their background, that everyone feels like they fit in when they get here, and to try and destroy some of the myths surrounding a 'Traditional Oxbridge Background'! We need lots of help with our initiatives, so if you'd like to be involved or even just find out more, email us at access@kcsu.org.uk - or grab us around college, we're normally in the bar playing pool! Hey Freshers! I’m Rory and I'm a 2nd year geographer and treasurer of KCSU. I have 2 main jobs, one is to manage all of KCSUs financial affairs including all ents, fresher’s week and any campaigns. As well as that, I sit on the SFC committee, which distributes funding to all societies and sports teams at kings. I draft a budget to be approved at an open meeting in Michaelmas term, then throughout the year I reimburse societies from their budgets whenever people spend money on their society. So, if you want to start up a society, get reimbursed for a society's expenditure or have any cool ideas for KCSU ents/campaigns then get in touch with the respective officer as well as myself at treasurer@kcsu.org.uk Hi, my name’s Chris, I’m a third year Engineering student and your Green & Charities officer – because even KCSU needs a conscience. I’ll be around to help you with any charitable events you want to run, not to mention the odd cake sale. That said it’s well known that my focus in the role is getting people keen about climate change and enforcing recycling on pain of death. Whether you want to get involved in the green scene or you just want to find out more about a specific issue, you can email me at green.charities@kcsu.org.uk, or find out more at www.kcsu.org.uk/green-charities/. Hi, I’m Martha - I’m a second year Sociology + Politics student at King’s college and this year’s Women’s Officer. My job is to represent the interests of women of King’s College, whether it’s through campaigning for better sexual harassment policies, running discussion groups, supporting students, or hosting the annual King’s Women’s Dinner. I will also bring King’s students concerns or issues to attention at the fortnightly forums of CUSU Women’s Campaign, their main decision making space. If you ever want to find out more information about how to get involved with feminism and gender equality at King’s or Cambridge, want support with anything, or just want a chat, make sure to contact me at womens@kcsu.org.uk - I’d love to hear from you! Hi, I’m Corey, 3rd year Engineer and your Sports, Societies and Fresher’s Officer. My role is to support the teams and societies at King’s, firstly by allocating funding from our Societies Budget, secondly by helping them achieving their goals, whatever they may be. Finally, I’ll be responsible for Fresher’s Week 2016 (Kaamil, our Head of Entertainments is running this year’s). As for myself, I’m a keen rugby league player and am always willing to provide support to those looking to get into blues teams or set up their own societies/teams. If you need anything in this regard, drop me a line at ssf@kcsu.org.uk. Hi, I’m Lorna, 3rd year medic and Accommodation and Amenities Officer for this year. My role is to take care of any issues you may have with college accommodation and catering services. This includes, and is not limited to, rents, bedders, hall food and other services provided by college. Over the last few years, former occupants of my role have fought hard to keep rent increases to a minimum and we had a recent success in campaigning for a cheaper meal option available from hall. If you have any issues relating to these categories, then drop me a line at domus@kcsu.org.uk Part 2 - Rooms, Services and Facilities at King’s All rooms, services and facilities below are free unless otherwise stated. They’re for you, so take advantage of them! If you have any questions and are unsure as to who you should contact, email the Domus Officer (domus@kcsu.org.uk) or, alternatively, speak to the Porters, who are available and on call 24h (porters@kings.cam.ac.uk or 01223 33 11 00). The aim is to get people at King’s into film by showing a range of films in Keynes Hall every week. On some nights, there is also discussion and associated talks after the screening. Contact – Kaamil Shah (ks680@cam.ac.uk) KCMS – King’s College Music Society is one of the most vibrant and high-profile music societies in Cambridge. King’s students cover a huge range of music each year, organising large-scale orchestral concerts each term, held in the stunning, world-famous Chapel, as well as quirky and intimate concerts in the Provost’s drawing room. Contact – Qasim Alli (qza20@cam.ac.uk) Mixed Netball – Like the Lacrosse team, but with netball! Contact – Ellie Archer (ema38@cam.ac.uk) Football – The King’s football team is decent and a good way of getting into the game. Contact – Jonny Foster (jf490@cam.ac.uk) Athletics – The aim of King’s College Athletics Club (KCAC) is to promote athletics in King’s. Men’s and women’s teams consisting of undergraduate and graduate students of King’s represent the college at intercollegiate cuppers competitions in athletics twice a year, in Michaelmas and Easter. The college has been highly successful in the recent history, being able to win multiple trophies. The club also provides a less intimidating way for students to try athletics, and has seen many members go on to take up their events at university level, making sure that King’s is appropriately represented in the university Athletics and Hare and Hounds clubs. Everyone, regardless of the level of experience, is welcome to join the team and compete. We explicitly advertise ourselves to complete novices. Also, we promote students to take part of the university athletics club, which also welcomes athletes of all standards. Contact – Men’s captain: Kert Putsepp (kp388@cam.ac.uk) Women’s captain: Carys Boughton (cb794@cam.ac.uk) Boat Club – King’s College Boat Club (KCBC) is probably the largest sports club in the College. There are several crews competing at different levels and beginners are very warmly welcomed. Many people start as novice rowers in Michaelmas; the technique is not too difficult to pick up, and learning to row can be a lot of fun as well as great exercise. The Fairbairns race (at the end of Michaelmas) and the Bumps (end of Lent and Easter) are brilliant fun, and there’s always Bumps Dinner to look forward to after four days of Bumps. As well as rowing, the Boat Club organises social events, and there are trips away from Cambridge for races for those who are keen. Rowing in Cambridge is just about the cheapest and easiest way to get into the sport. Contact – Men’s captain: Ollie Sluijters (kings.men@cucbc.org) Women’s captain: Ellie Archer (kings.women@cucbc.org) KMKA – King’s Mountaineering and Kayaking Association is the sports club for all things outdoor; they climb, kayak, hike, camp, abseil and canoe.
