Any feedback/comments you wish to provide would be appreciated. Advancing Warriors Evaluation—Fall 2009 Impact/Important thing learned: That to be a great leader, sometimes you have to let others lead The ability to relate and encourage I learned that the leader is not the people who can figure out all the good ideas but the people who can organize others to find out the best situation There is always room to improve What 5 areas I can focus for leadership development. The breakdown by week was very helpful! I learned not only how to receive feedback well, but also to give it to those I am leading To be a leader you must enable others to be a leader How better to be a leader in a group of my peers, not just when working with kids I have learned how to include others into my leadership I think the most important thing from this program that helped me as a leader was getting the beginning feedback from those who have watched me lead That there are areas I need to improve in but they are not the same ones I thought In almost every chapter I learned a new leadership skill that I applied to everyday leadership – excellent content Leadership styles are all unique. Engaging/professional facilitator To really evaluate and access, not only the way you lead, but the way your leaders are or have led you in the past I learned how to take the skills I previously knew and implement them in a new way Feedback/comments: I just want to say “thank you.” I thought I was an excellent leader coming into this and now I feel my knowledge has expanded and increased I love every time before the meeting, we talk, share something about ourselves, that’s really sweet. Thank you very much giving us such a good chance More activities within the class would be nice to make it more exciting. Really liked the assessment idea, and asking other people their thoughts on your leadership skills I really appreciated the examples the facilitator asked for from the attendees. It helped clarify the issue and gave me ideas for how my own experiences applied to the topic I loved the report/feedback that we received from our peers. Find a way to allow more choice in service projects. Do the ropes course again! Great job of keeping us all engaged and involved during each week’s session This course was beneficial to my leadership learning. It was actually FUN to come to I think all the topics were great and I really learned a lot. Even more incorporation of group activities would be great. Great program! Maybe start the service projects earlier in the semester One way I feel to improve/feedback that I have is trying to make the weekly meetings have more interaction more collaboration with the fellow leaders we are in the program with The powerpoints were a little dry and hard to pay attention to for long periods of time I thought this was a very well run program! Tracy you are a great instructor and clearly know your leadership skills/materials Loved the ropes course; could condense time to 1hr/wk and felt the “community service” project was just put upon us without notice Switching up the way you present would be good. Sometimes all powerpoints got a little tedious I liked the ropes course. It’s a good way to meet the people that are also in the program SERVICE PROJECTS QUESTIONS: How do you think the service projects experience could be improved? Maybe providing more time at the beginning of the sport to create something to use during it. Also, probably having bigger groups would have worked better too Combine the sports for fun experience. Have people give feedback on the event/project they worked on right away like for fan experience for football after promoting a game feedback on that game I thought we would pick a services project, to empower it. Sort of the way that class does stomp out hate. If we choose what to do I think we could have been more involved, and it would have been more worthwhile More planned out – I felt we were just thrown into it. It seemed unorganized. Do community service in the community More flexibility in choice of project (ex. – which sports and maybe have more structure from Travis in what he expects) They need to be started ASAP, better understanding of the project I feel that doing a big group service project would be more beneficial. The way we did it this time felt more like a class project than a service project The service project experience could be improved by including community projects (ex. Habitat for Humanity) and also by starting them earlier Having projects that could be implemented directly by the group involved would be helpful. It was hard to branstorm for projects that may/may not be carried out To be able to form groups & choose our own service project without having to choose from a group If we were given the project a little earlier in the semester, we might have had more of a momentum for enhancing the fan experience More choice in service project selection. This should give individuals greater ownership of project. If choice is not a part then have them use their skills more effectively; speaking, technology, etc. Include more areas than sports. The Inclusion & Diversity office has various projects that could use assistance and individual academic departments may have leadership needs from students It was difficult meeting 1) as a group and 2) with the advisor in the area, especially w/the time allowed. So maybe smaller group sizes and as a class come up with ideas I think we should let more students take part in the projects. Let us figure out more good ideas The service project could be improved by focusing the whole group on a specific project and grow as a team of leaders Should future leadership classes choose their own projects? OR should a list of projects still be generated and they can choose from there? I think they should choose their own project. They will pay more attention for their own interest Maybe both. The ideas are a nice idea but we might be able to come up w/good ones too List of projects should still be generated, but students may be able to offer their own ideas Yes and no. Some people need to have options for themselves I liked being presented with a list of possible service projects because they were things that others on campus already wanted to see done Choose their own so that it fits with their schedule. Have it be approved by Tracy though I think a list is good because it adds structure, but also allowing a group w/their own ideas to design a program would give more freedom The list of projects should still be implemented I like the idea of future groups choosing from a list of possibilities, but more group focused working together A list, otherwise you have too many people off in different directions. Also schedules of students should be reviewed before being put into a group I think they should choose. Although challenges are good, people always work harder & better at things their interested in & good at SERVICE PROJECTS QUESTIONS CONT. I think if groups choose their own projects they will be more passionate towards their topic Yes, It would be best to have us decide what is important to us to get done! A list should be provided & pick top 3 and you choose How about both. Have a generated list made, but also let kids/students bring their own ideas Depends on the group. Maybe provide the options to choose their own projects Do you have ideas for future service projects that could either be used as examples of what to do or could actually be done? Yes, develop a mode of communication with students that is actually read and understood by the student body Not at this point in time. If I think of something, I’ll write you an e-mail Fun experience for sporting events that not a lot of people attend. Ways to get freshmen to stay in Winona on weekends & not go home Ahh? Maybe some sort of event to raise money for a cause….a memorial walk, a concert…..a dinner. The group could vote on where the proceeds go to (ie. Special Olympics…..children w/cancer…..)and donate money there! Yes, food drives, benefit events, cleaning up Winona, etc. Getting involved in the community – bingo/roadside clean-up Sorry Habitat builds. More looking at what the community needs at the time N/A Building on the current events we worked on to implement some of the athletic ideas would be good Campus cleanup projects: Community cleanup project, campus activities on weekends and raking old people’s lawns Raffles, bingo and community involvement Community snow shoveling or highway cleanup Peer Inclusion & Diversity advising may need help Some project for connection with other universities Ideas to improve an area on campus, i.e. a park, monument, something like that
