Each of the recipients will use the scholarship monies to pursue post-secondary education in nutrition or food science at a university, college or trade school. “This is the inaugural year of the CKC Good Food Scholarship program,” said Nancy Close, president of CKC Good Food, “and we couldn’t be more excited to help students pursue a future in food science or nutrition. CKC Good Food specializes in providing healthy, tasteful meals to our schools as a means to teach students about wellness and nutrition. These scholarship recipients have taken that teaching to heart and plan to build their lives on that foundation and share it with others.” The recipients were chosen by the principal, a counselor and a teacher at their respective schools based on the students’ GPA of 2.5 or better, their demonstration of excellent citizenship and school or community leadership, and financial need. The client schools and their chosen recipients are: Cristo Rey Jesuit High School – Michelle Flores Flores, who lives in Minneapolis, will begin her post-secondary education at Minneapolis Community and Technical College in the fall and hopes to pursue culinary school in time. Cristo Rey is located in the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis. Higher Ground Academy – Said Ali Ali is planning to attend college in North Dakota in the fall. This Brooklyn Park resident participated in student council, basketball and soccer while attending Higher Ground Academy, and graduated in the top third of the senior class and was consistently on the A and B honor roll. Higher Ground Academy is located in St. Paul. Life Academy – Danika Johnson While at Life Academy, Johnson has participated in drama, art and soccer, and has received Life Academy’s Honors Certificate and its Academic Excellence Award. Outside of school, she has been active in her church youth group. Johnson lives in Lakeville and plans to attend Normandale Community College in the fall. Life Academy is located in Bloomington. Maranatha Christian Academy – Mackenzie Peterson Peterson, a resident of Plymouth, has been on the High Honor Roll and Principal’s Club at Maranatha Christian Academy, and has served as treasurer of the National Honor Society and boys basketball team manager. She also participated in Girls’ Ensemble. Outside of school, she has led a Bible study at New Hope Church and has volunteered at Feed My Starving Children. She plans to attend Bethel University in the fall. Maranatha Christian Academy is located in Brooklyn Park. MTS General Colin L. Powell Leadership Academy – Amber Mulligan Mulligan, a Minneapolis resident, received the Excellence in Art award, participated in yearbook, and volunteered at MTS Elementary School and at the Minnesota Children’s Museum while in high school. She plans to attend Minneapolis Community and Technical College following graduation. The Leadership Academy is located in the Longfellow neighborhood of Minneapolis. MTS P.E.A.S.E. Academy - Sarah Margolis A resident of New Hope, Margolis participated in the beading club and served on the yearbook committee while at MTS P.E.A.S.E. Academy. She plans to attend St. Cloud State University in the fall. MTS P.E.A.S.E. Academy is located in the University neighborhood in Minneapolis.
