OCCG Weekly Bulletin Wednesday 9 September 2015 Included in this bulletin: PLEASE NOTE IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING DENTAL CONDITIONS Annual Public Meeting Winter Campaign 2015-2016 Elective Care Scheme (ECIS) Information for Practices PLEASE NOTE IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING DENTAL CONDITIONS: Dr Andrew Burnett, Urgent Care Lead and SE Locality Clinical Director for OCCG reports that at a recent CCG dental review meeting the Public Health Dentistry Lead and the Local Dental Committee Operational Lead agreed that GPs should not be prescribing antibiotics for dental conditions. Patients should be able to contact a dentist within 12 hours. There are 10 dental practices across Oxfordshire contracted to provide emergency care and emergency dental clinics are available into the evenings and at weekends, contactable through 111. Action for practices: Brief GPs and practice nurses to ensure that they do not prescribe antibiotics for dental patients but encourage them to contact their own dentist or an emergency dentist via 111. Brief reception staff to advise patients who volunteer that they have a dental problem to redirect them to their own dentist or an emergency dentist via 111. As part of this, members of the CSU Communications and Engagement team will be attending Oxford Brookes and the University of Oxford Fresher’s Fairs with a new leaflet to signpost people to the right NHS service and enable them to get the best advice quickest. The leaflet aims to reduce pressure on A&E and GP services, freeing staff up to help those who need it most. The leaflet highlights the range of NHS services and advice available in Oxfordshire. Please click here to view the leaflet. A small number of leaflets will be sent to GP practices next week. The Elective Care Scheme (ECIS) is a voluntary scheme for practices within localities to work together to pilot innovative ideas within primary care which results in an alternative to referral to secondary care. These schemes will enhance care in primary care and cover mainly planned care referrals to acute hospital settings. Practices will receive a £1,000 ‘start up’ payment per scheme they sign up to (to a maximum of 3), and will receive a share of the savings made in reductions to secondary care for the relevant specialism at the end of financial years 2015-16 and 2016-17.
