Animal Classification Outline

Time/Historical Research

Vital Functions:

Give examples from each of the five categories of vertebrates (mammal, reptile, amphibian, fish and bird).

Use the Vital Functions material to research and discuss characteristics of each vertebrate

(mammal: fur, warm blooded, lungs to breathe; amphibians: smooth skin; reptile: scaly skin, lay eggs; bird: feathers, lay eggs; fish: cold blooded, aquatic, scales; etc.).

Complete a chart (template provided) of the Vital Functions of Vertebrate Animals. Be sure to include diagrams.

Language/Creative Writing

Imagine that you have discovered a new species of animal, never before seen. Draw a picture of the animal, describe its physical and behavioral characteristics, describe its habitat, and make up a scientific name for it. Use your imaginations when creating your new species.

Write a short story about the adventure your animal went through.

Geography Component/Mapping

An endangered species is a type of organism that is threatened by extinction. Species become endangered for two main reasons: loss of habitat and loss of genetic variation.

Include a map showing which animals are on the endangered list and their habitat

Include a legend

Include titles

Include labels

Include a compass rose showing north

Shade and colour your map

Using a map of Canada, classify which species is prominent to each province.

Create a mobile or flip book of your animal using the circular cut-outs, large to small, showing its classification.

Art

Classify as many people in your family as possible ex. Grandparents, parents and children. Be creative on how you want to display your family tree.
