Math Vocabulary:
1. Fraction –a number that names a part of a whole, a part of a collection, or a part of a region. Ex.
1/3, ½, or 2/3.
2. Mixed number- a number containing a whole number part and a fraction part. Ex. 3 1/4
3. Improper fraction- a fraction that is greater than or equal to 1. The numerator in an improper
fraction is greater than or equal to the denominator.
4. Decimal – a number with one or more digits to the right of a decimal point.
5. Decimal equivalent – a decimal that is equal to a whole number, a fraction, or another decimal.
6. Decimal point – a symbol used to separate dollars and cents in money amounts or to separate
ones and tenths in decimals.
7. Denominator- the number below the bar in a fraction.
8. Numerator – the number about the bar in a fraction.
9. Equivalent fractions – fractions that name the same amount. ½ and 3/6
10. Equivalent decimals – decimals that name the same amount 0.1 and 0.10
11. Like denominator – denominators in two or more fractions that are the same.
12. Percent –per hundred. The ratio of a number to 100. Ex. 9%, means 9 out of a 100 or 9/100
13. Simplest form of a fraction (reduce) –a fraction whose numerator and denominator have the
number 1 as the only common factor.
14. Tenth- one of the equal parts when a whole is divided into 10 equal parts.
15. Thousandth – one of the equal parts when a whole is divided into 1,000 equal parts.
16. Unit fraction – a fraction whose numerator is 1. Ex. ½. 1/3, 1/5, 1/8
17. Unlike denominator – denominators that are not equal.
