ACT Chief Minister’s ANZAC Spirit Prize 2014
Student Terms and Conditions
As part of Celebrating Canberra’s Centenary the ACT Government is proud to announce the
ACT Chief Minister’s ANZAC Spirit Prize 2014
All students in years 9 or 10 in 2013, from across the ACT, and aged between 14 and 17 years of age
inclusive as at the date of departure in April 2014, are invited to participate in this competition as
part of learning about the ANZAC spirit which formed, and continues to shape, our nation. Students
meeting the age criteria in years 9 and 10, who competed in the inaugural Competition held earlier
this year, are also eligible to re-apply.
Students are required to submit a creative response to the following task:
The Task:
Using the quotation provided below as inspiration, and the Stimulus Material,
compose an original creative response that clearly demonstrates your
understanding of the concepts presented in the quotation by Ataturk.
Engraved on the Memorial at Anzac Cove, Gallipoli Peninsula
"Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives...you are now living in the soil of a
friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and
the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours...
You, the mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries, wipe away your tears; your
sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace, after having lost their lives on this land
they have become our sons as well.”
Ataturk (1934)
Stimulus Material:
If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.
Mother Teresa
All men are brothers, like the seas throughout the world; so why do winds and waves clash
so fiercely everywhere?
Emperor Hirohito
War may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil,
never a good. We will not learn how to live together in peace by killing each other's children.
Jimmy Carter
Overview
The two students with the two winning entries will represent the ACT on a funded 13 day Study
Tour of Turkey and the Gallipoli Peninsula. The winning students will each be accompanied by a
teacher of the same gender as the student from their school, or a teacher nominated by the
Directorate’s Liaison Unit. The group will travel with a battlefield tour specialist to visit a number of
key battlefields on the Gallipoli Peninsula, including beaches and cliffside locations where the
ANZACs landed and fought, and war cemeteries of that region. The group will attend the Dawn
Service at ANZAC Cove and then walk to the Australian Lone Pine Service on ANZAC Day in 2014,
where they will lay a wreath on behalf of the ACT.
The Competition winners, and the Accompanying Teachers, will be considered ambassadors for
Canberra and they will promote the ACT Chief Minister’s ANZAC Spirit Prize both in the ACT and
overseas.
