Introduction
A. Detail #1: Simba is the lion cub who is supposed to be the next king.
B. Detail #2: Scar, Simba’s uncle, is the former king’s brother, who also wants to be king; however, Simba is
in his way of achieving that goal.
C.
Detail #3: Simba must overcome his doubt that he can replace his father as king and overthrow Scar to
become king.
D. Thesis statement: Simba’s internal conflict of doubting his ability to become king and person v. person
conflict with Scar develops the theme: self-confidence can empower an individual by helping him remove
obstacles that stand in the way of his destiny.
II.
Identification of the conflict(s) and the reasons for the conflict(s)
A. Topic sentence: Simba’s central conflicts are his doubt that he can replace his father as king and his
struggle with Scar.
B. Detail #1: Simba does not believe he will make a good king because Scar tricked him and made him
believe that he had a part in killing his own father.
C.
Detail #2: Simba would rather live his life with “no worries,” and a life as a king would involve
responsibility.
D. Detail #3: Scar simply wants Simba out of the way because Scar wants the power that comes with being
king, and Simba is in the way because he is the rightful king.
III.
Resolution of the conflict
A. Topic sentence: Simba’s central conflicts are resolved when he determines to return with confidence to
Pride Rock as the rightful king and when he defeats Scar in the final battle.
B. Detail #1: With Rafiki and his father’s help, Simba gains self-confidence and realizes that he cannot simply
run from his past but should face it by returning to Pride Rock.
C.
Detail #2: Simba defeats Scar in a battle and forces Scar to reveal the truth about Mufasa’s death, and
Simba tells Scar to run away, just like Scar told Simba right after Mufasa died.
D. Detail #3: Because Scar is defeated, the “circle of life” continues again with Simba as king, Nala as his
wife, and a new cub as their heir.
IV.
Connection of the conflict to a theme
A. Topic sentence: Simba’s conflicts reveal that self-confidence can empower an individual by helping him
remove obstacles that stand in the way of his destiny.
B. Detail #1: Simba did not believe he could be king because of his guilt over Mufasa’s death; however,
Rafiki and Simba’s father showed Simba that he was capable of being a noble king.

Detail #2: Simba gained confidence because Simba cared deeply about what his father thought of him,
and if his father believed in him, Simba realized he could believe in himself, too.

to train and hopefully win medals.
