Santa Claus, referred to as the Old Man. Children which want to get a gift from Santa Claus write him a letter to the North Pole, where he lives. Toys for the Children are manufactured by Santa Claus elves. Santa Claus has just one night to carry these gifts to children around the world. Lithuanian Santa Claus is called "Kalėda". Unlike in Western countries, Lithuanian Santa Claus doesn‘t wear bright red clothes, he chooses a more practical clothing like furs. Santa Claus brought presents only for children, who were required to earn them by performing for every present. They had to perform whatever they were able: recite a poem, sing a song, do a dance, or play an instrument. Christmas presents and Santa Claus were relatively new things in Lithuania during the period of independence. Earlier, people celebrated Christmas not for the presents but because it was the birthday of God's Son.
