Professional Learning Themes
Theme 1: Trends in International Education: Pam Ryan (Director of Education, English
Schools Foundation, Hong Kong). Pam Ryan (a former NSWDEC senior officer) heads the international school foundation in Hong Kong. This full-day will include a school visitation program in addition to presentations and discussions with Pam Ryan at the system level.
Theme 2: Trends in International Leadership: Professor Allan Walker (Professor of
International Educational Leadership, Dean of the Faculty of Education and Director of The
Asia Pacific Centre for Leadership and Change @ The Hong Kong Institute for Education).
Professor Walker (an Australian) is a world-renowned researcher, publisher and presenter on the impact of educational leadership. This half-day will be spent with Professor Walker discussing and sharing international movements in education and leadership.

Theme 3: Creating Capacity at the School Level: Professor Louise Stoll (London Centre for
Leadership in Learning). Professor Stoll in a world leader in Learning Communities, School
Culture and School Capacity. This morning session will be spent discussing Professor Stoll’s research findings in these areas; and relating those to international trends and your school context.
Theme 4: School Led Collaboration: Tom Whittingham (Head of External Developments,
Institute of Education, University of Worcester). This full-day program focuses on grasping the educational reform agenda and making a positive impact through collaboration. The session explores practical examples of how school leaders can collaborate ( at national and international levels) to make a difference.
Theme 5: School Collaboration in action: Jon Barr (Head Teacher Meadowbrook Primary
School) . A half day program of school visitations in South Gloucestershire (organized by Jon
Barr) to explore principals sharing practical examples of principal collaboration; and to experience local school in action.

Theme 6: The National College for Teaching & Leadership: a national perspective. This fullday program will include: an overview of the college (its history and function); an overview of the English Education System; and two workshops based on the findings of a 3 year national research project on the impact of leadership on pupil outcomes (with particular reference to the role of the principal).
Theme 7: Local Schools/Local Decision in action (Essex): Graham Lancaster (Lead
Commissioner, Essex Educational Authority). This full-day will include meetings and discussions with the senior officers of the Essex Education System (so as to provide an overview of local autonomy in practice); followed by visits to local schools (to experience the local schools in action).
