Emerson SILC Title I Parent –Teacher Compact ALL FAMILIES INFORMATION IS PREPARED IN BOTH ENGLISH AND SPANISH. Emerson SILC tells families about state standards, our curriculum and our assessments by: Welcome Back to School Events, Fall Open House, bi-yearly Parent Teacher conference days, periodic grade level meetings and weekly classroom newsletters throughout the year. Parents can view written student work and view expected proficiency levels. Emerson SILC Family Handbook/calendar outlines details of conferences, communication and testing Written Communication regarding testing days sent home in school wide and grade level newsletters, followed by an automated phone reminder in family’s native language. Providing prompt responses to parents inquiring about their child’s academic progress or attendance data. Emerson SILC strives to communicate to families about the progress of their children by keeping families involved and active in their child’s school experience by: Holding parent –teacher conferences each year in the fall for all families and also mid year conferences for anyone who choose to have one. Parents can view written student work and view expected proficiency levels. Parents may also contact a teacher at any point during the year to request of conference regarding at students progress. Emerson SILC issues report cards three times per year in the student’s native language. Fall conferences are held in place of a fall report card. Students in Grade Pre K-5 receive number grades. Report cards are sent to families in the child’s backpack in grades Pre K-5. First report card – November 2015 Second Report Card - January 2016 Third Report Card - March 2016 End of the Year - June 2016 – last day of school All grade levels send home ongoing informal assessment information through the course of the year. Make phone calls to parents to address academic triumphs and concerns. Mail home “íBuenas Noticias! Post cards to share good student news with families. Emerson SILC has a monthly newsletter El Infomrativo that goes home with all students. Grade level teaching teams also send home weekly/biweekly classroom newsletters. An automated phone message system delivers meeting/event information to each family in their native language. All Emerson families are welcome to visit school at any point in time during our school day. All parents are invited to observe classes and provide input into their child’s educational process. Emerson SILC values parents and the community as partners. Together all can be involved in decision making that benefits our school and the families we serve. Parents and the community are an active part of our Emerson SILC Site council – making up more than half of the site council membership. The Emerson SILC PTSA offers short and long term opportunities for leadership and decision making Emerson creates “special task forces” when needed to work on a project to support our school. Emerson SILC provides leadership development through regularly scheduled meetings(usually the Third Tuesday of most months) these informative meetings provide resources to assist parents in helping their students be successful at school Emerson SILC provides educational opportunities through Coffee with the Principal and ongoing educational programs. Emerson SILC provides materials and training to help families help their children with school work by: Each family receives and Emerson SILC “ Homework Dictionary “ with terms and vocabulary in both English and Spanish. Offering one-on-one family conferences to go over academic content standards and student progress. Having materials available for parents to select and take home to assist students at home. Placing Family Resource on the Emerson SILC web site Providing schools supplies needed to be successful at school. Offering opportunities for parents to learn how to better support their children’s learning at home through our school newsletters, grade level meetings, information education meetings at school and in the community. Honoring reasonable requests for special make-up work for students who have families with atypical situations that have impacted student attendance. Work with the teacher first if you encounter a disagreement When something comes up in your child class that causes you concern the first step is always talk with your child’s teacher about the concern. Set up an appointment or schedule a phone call with the teacher. Keep in mind the end of the day when you are both tired may not be the best time for a discussion involving strong feelings Seek to learn the facts. Talk with your child but try not come to conclusions until you have also talked with the teacher. Look for misunderstanding. Sometimes teachers are not aware of a child’s confusion or difficulty about assignments Try to avoid criticizing the teacher or the school in front of your child. Discuss possible solutions to how you, the teacher and your child might work to solve the issue. Talk about how best to move forward. If you can’t agree on a solution discuss who you should contact for the next step. In the event the there is an unresolved school issue that is not satisfactory to the parents of participating children, parents may Contact the classroom teacher Contact the Principal by phone, email or appointment to express their concerns. Together a plan will be created to address concerns Other Important Information on Family Involvement All families are welcome to assist at school in a variety of ways. Grade level parent volunteer forms are provided to each family. Parents serve on the Emerson SILC Site Council The Emerson SILC PTSA plans a wide variety of activities throughout the year to actively involve the PTSA sponsored activities planned throughout the year. Parent Responsibilities: Make sure my child attends school daily and on time Help complete assignments, work and projects at school/home Model/teach my child honesty, trust, respect and integrity Notify school if my child will be absent Consistently provide a quiet place to study Attend parent/teacher conferences Communicate with the school whenever I have concerns Promote respect for others regardless of age, sex, race or ability Monitor what my child watches on TV and limit their time playing electronic games.
